How is the ship length calculated?

I have been messing around with 3d modeling, and in order to get the scales right, I need to know how the in-game ship length is calculated. As an example, the Magnate class frigate has a listed length of 64m, but this could be length like so, height
which is the longest of the x/y/z axes, or the longest straight line between vertices, which in this case would be diagonal
