It's almost unavoidable that every larger community has people you don't like and who behave bad and don't meet your standards.
If you'd play monopoly not only with your family, but with 10,000 people, then you couldn't be that sure there are none who'd spit in your snacks.
And there are bound to be some bad losers who will be angry at you for winning, or feel betrayed at you for breaking that alliance even though it only was in the game.

My personal experience with EvE is that it's not that bad as you people creating threads as this one make it out to be.
Sure, there are trolls and such, as everywhere on the internet.
But it's been very rare that I've seen someone ask a sensible question on these forums who didn't get help. Sure, even in those cases there are some trolls, too, but rarely malicious ones, and if misinformation is spread, others speak up to correct it.

That said, there are some topics that are just beat to death already, and some people create threads where they insult half of the community from the start or otherwise show an attitude of not seeking help or a discussion, but just wanting to rant or rile up people "for their cause".
The responses to such threads are predictably less constructive.

EVE is a 11 year long (so far) arena match that keeps moving forward. Many have joined the battle, many have survived the tests and trials so far, but countless have fallen because they weren't the sharpest, the fastest thinking, the most devious, the most ruthless or most intelligent thinking.

Yeah, the self congratulatory nonsense about how we are all so awesome to stick with this game might suit CCP to propagate, but if you think only the sharpest, fastest thinking are playing this game, you're delusional.

And if you took that as anything other than face value sarcasm, you sir, are delusional.

The problem with the meta in EvE right now, and that this thread propagates is what our former CSM started.

Character assassination via allegation of "cyberbullying."

And make no mistake, that is all anyone tries to do anymore. All anyone "cares" about. Because thinking for themselves is too hard. Or for vengeance. Or for whatever.

God forbid a person actually have a natural tendency toward sarcasm.

Or that they play a scam to perfection, ending with the "mark" scamming themselves.

At one point, it was merely "tear collection."

When someone created an issue that was proven to be trumped up ten fold, obviously this is going to shift the way the meta plays.

And frankly, this thread is the core of the problem, along with CCP's advertising.

CCP has literally made it to where players actually try to equate "spaceship violence, scamming, infiltrating, etc." to "actual hurtful act in real life" with years of their "EvE is Real" bullshit.

And it is exactly that. Bullshit.

It's a game. Pixels. Even the meta game is tied directly to the gain and/or loss of said pixels.

So people can either sit here and hand-wring over trumped up issues that are continually progressed by threads such as these....

Or they can have fun like we did with UAE's "Weekly Highsec Braveheart" thread. Use wit, sarcasm, etc. to actually have fun.

Tbh, I would rather be sarcastic, be considered a troll, and have fun...than worry about assassinating characters with pettiness.

But, hey, that's just me. I play video games for fun. And I certainly don't worry about what someone in a fit of rage (often from their own stupidity) is throwing at me. I am still going to be sarcastic and rational. And I will worry about it once the EULA and ToS and Forum Rules ban sarcasm and rationality.

But, hey, you're right. I'm delusional.

Thanks, I actually just happened to see your portrait earlier on the "Beautiful Portraits" thread and liked yours a lot, so I guess similar taste :)

Anyone interested in culture, but who employs a usage such as "culture/meta" is so bereft of any basic understanding of the subject, remedial education would be required at once before any rational discussion of "culture" could proceed. If this sentence sent you to a dictionary, that's a good start.

We must accommodate the idiocracy.

EVE is arguably harder than most other MMOs, so the community's average IQ is arguably a bit higher.

I appreciate this, I personally prefer a smart troll to a dumb do-gooder.

The forward slash was denoting "or", and the reason I spoke of the culture and meta is because I have heard other people refer to Eve having a horrible player base and that we promote trolling. This most often appears in the meta game of Eve, as more often than not this is where this culture manifests itself.

Most of the people responding have also chosen to ignore that I am pointing out, in my opinion, that they are also the best parts of the game.

I love this game, and honestly I have a good laugh when I see a witty or trollish response on the forums. My concern is what image we are presenting to not only new players, but also prospective players.

I'm not sure what about my post made you feel that I needed "remedial education". As a former publisher I can appreciate the English language and how little the average person knows of their own language. But that is also why I had an editor, I didn't go to school to get a degree in English.

That being said, I must thank you for providing more content confirming my initial statement.

Anyone who takes a casual look at EVE will come away with an opinion that EVE people are truly awful and that the meta is no different from other internet hazing cultures like Kugu, /b/, Something Awful, you name it.

This is why Ripard's grandstanding about scamming in EVE was so damaging.. because it led the reader to believe that Ripard's biopsy of EVE culture was enough for someone to judge all of EVE.

People in EVE are a bit more complicated than that, as intelligent people tend to be. I think it's *good* that casual interaction is discouraged. People can have a "these people are good" and "these people are bad" opinion.. but they really don't get engaged until they say "these people make me feel xyz". As with any non-superficial relationship, xyz is both positive and negative.

EVE people should seem incredibly warm and wonderful AND deeply frustrating and combative. It's called not being two dimensional.
