mobile tractor units

I left a mobile tractor unit at a mission site and turned in the mission and there is no way to scan it down how am i supposed to get it back.

Also, I think that MTUs don't work when you are off-grid, but I'm not sure.

They do.

This is the best CCP post I can find that describes why they may not have worked off grid at one point.

This player reports that 6-7 is the maximum number off grid.

Combat scanner probes works just fine. Used them a couple of times to scan down tractors in high sec, back when agressing the tractors would make the guys drones attack you. (a guy in an ishtar lost a 400 mil module to this... Most hillarious part was that I put it for sale in jita and the next day it had sold to the exact same guy)

Also, the tractor works just fine when no one is around.

If by cool you mean 100% correct then yes he's rather cool.
Combat probes go in an expanded probe launcher and will geve you signals for anything players tend to leave in space and a mtu will light up like a beacon.
