What discourages people to try solo pvp?

I would not say I am ever discouraged to solo pvp, I just do not do it I am more interested in winning at all cost than looking fancy so I will bring in alts or friends almost everytime.

Simply because you never know what they have waiting.

Yes but you guys still solo a lot, I have a high degree of respect for your corporation because several times I have had engagements with you guys on a 1 vs 1 basis, where you had active people in the same system, running other plexes, yet, you honored the solo pvp, even if I was winning.

I don't go out of my way looking for solo pvp, I don't actively avoid it either. I'm one of those "if it happens it happens" folk that wanders about.

What I do see a lot in the forums ( despite the fact I've played Eve on and off for years I rarely venture into the forums, I'm trying out something new for a change) is a whole bunch of posts that indicate that solo pvp "doesn't exist" and all you get is roaming gangs of folk attacking noobs or ganking folk.

From my point of view this would probably actively discourage folk who are either new to Eve or are unsure about pvp (I am no expert though so my view may be completely wrong here) because it's made out to be some sort of isk sink that unless you're in a huge fleet you will never get a fair fight.

On the flip side you get folk who throw three sheets to the wind and dive head first in, I recently read a great post about a new player who just wanted to get into pvp and tried soloing first, got nuked, talked to the folk, got invited into the corp and joined in some fleet action. Much fun was had Big smile (also a really enjoyable read)

I dunno, I'm probably rambling now so I'll stop here o7

Same things discourage me from solo PvP as from group PvP: its pointlessness and boredom in EVE. In other games I can either acquire items and/or fun in PvP. EVE version of PvP is exactly the opposite of "fun" term and losing ships isn't exactly fun either.

EVE isn't other games, and permaloss is one of its core tenets. You will lose ships in PVE as well and never get them back. More importantly, it's what makes PVP in this game like no other game in the best way possible - that real adrenaline rush you get from participating is because of the sense of real risk. In 'other games', when you die, for some reason your body regenerates with all the armour and weapons it was carrying even though they fell with your body where you died. There's no risk associated with it.

Losing cheapish ships isn't a problem - problem is EVE PvP is slow, boring, does not have any dynamic, overcomplicated, there are way too much losses compared to wins and so on. It's not fun. I'm getting much higher quality of entertainment from PvP in other games - the only distinctive feature of EVE is territory control and blob warfare for larger groups but I do not belong to any. So I just PvP in games where it's more dynamic and casual and does not take hours of research, preparations and searches for targets.

Whole EVE reminds me of open ocean fishing process. I prefer fishing in lakes and rivers.
