As an inventor, let me tell you that it's not worth the effort.
You'd need a crapton of skills for inventing, and you will need them all at decent levels to stand a chance at invention success. You will also need perfect manufacturing skills.
If your only objective is just to get your mining crystals a few bucks cheaper, it's simply not worth the money and training time you will have to invest.

Hope that helps.

I'd like to apologize for the poor quality of the post above and sincerely hope you didn't waste your time reading it. Yes, I do feel bad about it.

my goal is to train this toon into 100% industrialist, and get all the industry skills to 5, so nothings a waste for me

If you're interested in industry to make a profit, focus on the most profitable items. Invention or manufacturing for your own use is virtually the same as declaring 'I mined it myself so....' (Look that phrase up to see what I mean). T2 mining crystals weren't all that profitable last time I checked due to T2 BPO holders, although it might have changed.

If you're interested in indy more as a hobby and learning exercise, just jump in and try what interests you. As long as you don't lose a ton of ISK it's valuable experience. It's useful to start small and scale up. I did rigs > t1 mods > t1 ships > t2 mods > t2 ships > caps > supers. Working through varying degrees of complexity give you chance to digest the market in manageable chunks. Obviously you can skip stages, but doing it this way allows you the time to skill up and train additional alts. You don't need the science skills at 5 to invent by the way, it only gives a tiny % chance bonus. Level 4 is fine and you can just focus on specific items to start with, then branch out.

The S&I/MD forums are worth a look for further guides/help on industry & trade. Some of the ingame trade channels are useful, there are usually people you can chat with and start forming contacts. GD is a bit hit and miss on topics like this. Good luck ;)

Oh sorry, I understood you only wanted to build mining crystals for yourself.

Best way to get started is T1 production, ammo is usually a safe bet and good for beginners. It's best to start with high-run and good researched (ME > 20) BP-copies that you can acquire over contracts, mostly around Jita.

Work on your manufacturing and marketing skills while you slowly replace your copies with originals and resarch them to better Material/ Production levels. Get an idea of what sells and what doesn't. Find your niche.
Then slowly start training the science skills (they are quite expensive for beginners, 10 M per skillbook iirc).

Good standing with an NPC research corp might help you to access Level 4 R/D agents that produce datacores for you (datacores are used in the invention process), but this is not really required, many inventors just buy their datacores off the market.

But do read the eve-uni article I linked- invention is quite complicated for beginners, so you should read all guides you can find.

You'll spend almost the same amount of ISK inventing and building them. While there are some slim margins you could conceivably gain from, you'd be able to get similar savings from well-placed buy orders.

In fact, saving money is never a good motivation for industry — all you end up doing is shifting the ISK around in a more complicated pattern before spending just as much as you did before. Instead, do industry to earn more and use that extra cash to buy (cheaply if possible) the same things you were already buying.

Basics:

Read the market and industry forums.
Use Eve Central
Use an online manufacturing cost calculator.
Use your local knowledge to your advantage.

In your case you are a miner so work out what mining related things are hard to get in your location and require travel.

Then find a source (build or buy) and put some up for sale at an OK profit. Build up from there.

Do not sell at a few percent above Jita as that is not worth your while. However do not put up a stupid price either. Even if things sell at that price someone will spot your high prices in EVE Central and freight 50 items in and undercut you.

Inventing mining crystals is not really profitable considering the effort involved and the fact you're competing with everyone else who wants to make a relatively simple item through invention. You might fare better inventing something else.
