I'm sure many of us religiously lock our systems when we walk away from them. With the coming of Eve Probe, wouldn't it be useful if, instead of hitting Win + L, we can open up Probe and let it do its thing, yet still leave the PC fairly "secure" against roommates and such?

EDIT: For those who have no idea what I'm talking about: Eve Probe is an upcoming program, separate from the Eve client, that will allow us to brute force test the graphics engine of Eve. It will run pre-recorded "movies" on our systems that will run in the graphics engine instead of just being a pre-rendered video file. It will then send metrics back to CCP, so that they can have a ton of performance information about their code for wider variety of systems and setups than they could possibly test on their own.

As long as it's optinal for those of us who don't care, sure.

De'Veldrin's Corollary (to Malcanis' Law): Any idea that seeks to limit the ability of a large nullsec bloc to do something in the name of allowing more small groups into sov null will inevitably make it that much harder for small groups to enter sov null.

even after reading that...

tl;dr:

Eve Probe is a new CCP toy that would basically enable you to run prescripted Eve "movies" on your PC (prescripted as in CCP designed the content and you can't make new ones) to test out new graphics features on a wider variety of equipment configurations than they can ever hope to have in house. This would let them get massive client performance feedback on new features BEFORE they snarl a large portion of the playerbase. It collects metrics from your PC and reports them back to CCP for analysis on the performance.

The OP's idea is to allow Eve Probe to basically lock your PC when it runs, letting you wander off and do things while it's running if you don't want to watch the graphics show again.

De'Veldrin's Corollary (to Malcanis' Law): Any idea that seeks to limit the ability of a large nullsec bloc to do something in the name of allowing more small groups into sov null will inevitably make it that much harder for small groups to enter sov null.

Though I never lock my PC for whatever reason I support the option for those who do.

Eve Probe was introduced on fanfest 2014

Malcoreh, maybe you can clarify that Eve Probe is a test/research engine and link it in your top post, just to prevent more WHUT ? and get more +1. Just a thought. Cool

Yah, sorry. I just made the edit. Admittedly, I made this post, then completely forgot about it.

So instead of the classic CTRL-ALT-DEL to unlock your computer showing you would now have Probe acting like a screensaver with the same function.

Yeah... I could go for that :)

Cloaking is the closest thing to a "Pause Game" button one can get while in space.

This whole Eve Probe thing sounds rather interesting (honestly first I've heard of it, but I have been taking a bit of a break). So it stress-tests the engine on the host's machine and sends the resulting data off to CCP so they know better how Eve runs on our machines? Sort of a "See what we see" tool, or a benchmark program specific for Eve's engine, it seems. I like.

On the original question, I do live alone and don't have that sort of "lock when you leave" need, but spent over 4 years in the military following that very same rule religiously, so I can see where you're coming from.

I will +1 this as well.

"Tomahawks?"

"----in' A, right?"

"Trouble is, those things cost like a million and a half each."

"----, you pay me half that and I'll hump in some c4 and blow the ---- out of it my own damn self."
