I ask questions looking for informed responses and enlightening answers (like the one immediately above). I should be used to the low signal to noise ratio on the eve-o forums by now but somehow it often manages to creep up on me and surprise me.

Not really. I was hoping someone would tell me something I didn't know, such as whether DUST corps can be steered towards fighting on certain planets, how the DUST contract system works more broadly, whether there are mechanics that stop swings from being too extreme, or whether orbital bombardments have any effect. Only one of the posts so far has any real light on any of these questions.

from my experience most of the matches i helped are victories. This can have multiple reasons, one is that dustlers only ask for help if they have a squad leader and a proper team (usually the squad leader is who is asking for OP support). So they are already organised and have the advantage. The fact that they know that they get help might also encourage them to use more expensive stuff (just a guess).

Or, OBs itself can turn the tide on a match. Since being in orbit not only gives them an OB every 4 minutes, it also makes sure the opponent doesn't get one. (Unless you are a farmer and run from everything)

but i am never actively seeking for dust matches, i usually only help if i am nearby and in a coercer (which is probably best ship for OBs, so i have usually ammo for it in cargo)

Thanks - that's very helpful and their usefulness seems to be born out by the frequent use of them in the Molden Heath area where they take the DUST thing very seriously. Would still like to get some harder data though. Do you know if there are dedicated DUST KBs that would allow the number of kills from OBs to be cross-referenced against kills achieved on the ground?

Are orbital bombardments that decisive?
Don't know. Why don't you try it out and get back to us. You can at least make some good LP out of it if you're on the winning side already.

Were back to the situation where amarr complain because they got the short straw, because of this they will never again put any effort into FW since complaining on the forums is easier!

FYP.

My corp is active in both games and, from the DUST perspective, the advantage of an orbital strike often isn't so much in the number of clones killed, but in the ability to use it strategically to stop an advance, take pressure off of a position, etc... I rarely see more than a few clones killed at a time, but consistent orbitals can be decisive if the squad leader knows what they're doing.
