Forum code counting towards signature length

It would seem forum code is being counted towards # of characters allowed in one's signature. The max is 500.

For instance I can barely add anything more to my signature, despite their being under 100 chars.

The html code is part of the signature, it's just not being displayed because the client is parsing it. When you look at a portrait with a lot of links all of that code still has to be downloaded to your client even though it's not being displayed. If it wasn't included in the character limit there'd be nothing to stop someone putting hundreds of single-letter links in their bio with a combined character count of millions that would lag you out every time you looked at it.

edit: forgot to mention, if you use long links you should probably compress them using something like tinyurl.

edit2: also I'm an idiot and read 'signature' as 'biography' and thought you meant in-game. Derp. Ignore my post or point and laugh as you see fit.
