selling to buyers

Hi all,

A new player here. Started making some money by mining. And when I was trying to sell, I was confused with sellers and buyers parts of the market screen.
I understand the sellers part, I think. However, how do I sell to a specific buyer? Whenever I double click a buyer, still a "Buy item" window pops up, not "Sell item", just like when I click a seller. I thought I had to be at the buyer's station, so I warped there, but still could figure it out :(.
Please help!

I had the same problem. I'll tell you what I do but maybe there is a better way to do it. I just go the the station and sell the items at the price of the highest offer. When created, my item is automatically sold to the posting buyer and boom... Cash.

I kinda suspected that after reading more about the market system in EVE. If you place a sell order in the same system, it is automatically sold to a buyer in that system. I thought that maybe it was like a direct player to player deal with no broker fee and tax involved :).
Thanx for confirmation.

It's probably starting in the "advanced" view. There's a way to switch it back, but I forget atm (I THINK a button that looks like this - "<<"). I generally keep it in advanced though, so I might be off. You can always right click the item and choose "Sell Item" in order to sell to the highest buy order in range of you (i.e. if someone set an order in Jita for 1 jump radius and you're in perimeter, they'll get your stuff if they're offering more than someone in the Perimeter station).

Another thing to consider is that the market is broker based rather than being a direct trade between two parties.

People wanting to buy something essentially say "Hey broker, I want to buy 10,000 units of Trit, and pay 5.10 ISK per unit".
People selling say "Hey, I have 10,000 units of Trit to sell. I'll sell to anyone offering AT LEAST 5.11 ISK".

In the event that a BUY order would offer more money than a SELL order, the sell order is filled at the buy order price (i.e. the seller will see their items go for more than their list price). You see this a lot when there are small quantity items -- e.g. you need 30k trit, but the best sell order is only for 15k @ 5.00 ... there's another 15K in various amounts going anywhere from 5.01 to 5.2 ISK. you're OK with paying 5.2 ISK (because you'll still profit), so you set up a buy order for 30k units at 5.2 ISK.

One of the bitter points of a good bittervet is the realisation that all those SP don't really do much, and that the newbie is having much more fun with what little he has. - Tippia

The buy sell orders are pretty straightforward once you know them. Sell orders are from the people selling an item, they name their price and the item is held in leiu until someone buys it at that price or the duration of the sell order runs out. Buy orders are people sayining they want to buy the item at a price they specify. Their money is held in leiu again, until someone sells to them at that price or the order expires.
If you r-click - sell an item it will generally be sold to the highest buy order available to you in the station the item is in. Likewise, buying an item will charge you for the lowest sell order price in the station you are in or the nearest station if there are none for se where you are. If you look on the market the 'range' of buy and sell orders can be important. Look at the highest buy price and where they buy from. All regional buy orders will be displayed but only those in green are within range to buy from your current location. When selling an item the range can be important; the best buy orders may not be buying from the station where your goods are and so you will lose money selling it there. Just as you'd go a couple of jumps to save a couple of mil on a cruiser.
If you want to name your own price then instead of selling to the highest bidder in range, sell the item and click advaced in the sale menu. Then you can pick your price and the duration of your sell order. This is often the better plan if there's a large gap between the lowest sell order and the highest buy order at your location. R-clickselling is easy and quick but sometimes you will get ripped off. Hope this makes sense and good luck!

If you set the duration to "Immediate", you will be able to sell without paying a broker fee. But you always pay the sales tax.

IIRC in the simple view (where you don't see a duration), it's always "immediate".

The market is a brokerage system. You cannot choose your customers.

You always sell to the highest available buy order, and buy from the lowest available sell order.

Orders are prices that people are willing to buy at, or willing to sell at, so you can overpay when buying if you are not careful. i.e. if a person is selling at 100 ISK you can pay them 10,000,000 ISK or even more; watch the decimals! Press tab after entering amounts!

Make sure to sort both buy and sell orders correctly by price, by double-clicking on the column header. By default they are not correct. Sell orders: Lowest price at top. Buy Orders: Highest price at top.

As above, sell orders can have a duration from immediate to 90 days. There are no broker fees on immediate orders, but you must pay transaction tax on all income from sell orders.

good explanation - the only factor that wasnt mentioned is range.

you can only sell to buyers IF their buy orders are with range of your goods., otherwise it goes to the highest within range.

very often the well-paying buy orders will have limited range, like one system, one station, or 2-3 jumps (seller get lower price for not having to deliver their goods to market.

some of the worst paying buy orders are region wide; convenience of being able to sell from any station and making the buyer roam the region scooping up his purchases commands lower prices.

and to add to Willnahh's post - if you are in range of the buy order it will be highlighted green in the buy orders section of the market interface.

Thanks for tip about immediate sell. In my case, by default a sell order is set to 1 day, so I wouldnt have know without this information.
Now I am a little confused about range...
Is there range for sell orders? Or when I buy something, it always appears at that station and I have to go there to pick it up?
And if range for a buy order is wider than station, then I can sell to it from anywhere within the range, even if it may be a few jumps away from the station where the buy order was originated?

Sell orders are only restricted by region, they can't be seen or purchased outside the current region.

Anything you buy will spawn in the station it was for sale at, if it's not your current station then you'll need to pick it up, it'd be wise to go into the market settings and filter out lowsec systems for this reason.

If a buy order is within the amount of jumps listed as the range then yes you can sell stuff to it from anywhere within that range.

Person to person sales are normally done by contract (semi safe, read it at least twice) or the trade window (bad move), both are subject to the rule of If it looks too good to be true, it's a scam, as are some of the more tempting opportunities and esoteric items available on the market.

In the beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

The above posts are incorrect. Yes, you sell to the highest bidder, but you buy from whomever you click on. So it is possible to pay above the lowest price.

If shuttles are selling for 12k and 120k and 1.2M Don't click on the 1.2M and select buy..

If you want to sell to someone directly, meet them in a station or use contracts.

--edit double checked just in case since everyone else was saying something different.. I selected1 unit of Mexallon at 120 even though there were orders selling for 70, 70, and 68 at station. My transaction history shows a deduction of 120 not 68.

If you ever wondered why people had stuff priced stupid high on the market, now you know.

As I stated above:

If you have two people AT THE SAME STATION selling THE SAME ITEM, you will always buy from the person with the LOWEST PRICE, even if you click on the higher priced item. You will just pay that person more ISK than they asked for.

You get to choose the price, not the seller / buyer.

You will buy from the cheapest order, just at the higher price.

If you purchased from the 1.2M order, you would end up paying 1.2M to the person who was selling them at 12K. The person selling them at 1.2M would still get nothing (unless they're the same person with two different orders, which is possible).

One thing to keep in mind is that you can sort of customize the buy and sell orders:
Sorting by price was mentioned, for sell orders the lowest on top and for buy orders the highest offered price, but you can also sort by name of the station and then the orders there by lowest or highest price. That is a useful setup if you don´t intend to fly around a lot and/or trade in the regional Hub where the prices are already the most competitive.

This is also the reason why you sometimes get a lot more ISK for an item than you sold it for... and if that sum is completely "unrelated" to your asking price that is a good indication that this person didn´t properly set up his orders and missed the missed the lowest sell order. Blink

Yes, and you bought one unit of mex from the guy who was asking 68, paying him 120 isk. Look at the quantites of the orders before and after, the one at 68 is the one that dropped by 1 unit, not the one at 120.

I've several times been the cheapest sell order in the station and had someone do what you did, buying an item from me for far more than I was asking.

OHH! I was looking at my transactions and couldn't figure out why someone had paid WAY more for something I was selling than my sale price. The next highest seller at that station had a much higher price. That's what must have happened.

While I appreciate the correction about the item transfer, no one addressed overpaying by clicking on a different order. The post you made above only mentioned accidental overpayment when entering prices.

I wanted to make clear that clicking on a random station buy order would not always net the lowest price. Which is how the posts above read, intentional or not.

Specifically comments like:

Good discussion!
I see that it is quite easy to make a mistake if you are not paying attention.
Since this thread is going, I thought I'd ask 2 more new questions here instead of making a new thread.
I read a little about pvp and saw location bookmarks mentioned. Is it locations saved in "People&Locations" tab or is it something more convenient? I tried drag&dropping a saved location, it does have a pin icon and is draggable, but it is not droppable. Can I put any location somewhere where I can just access it by right-click and dock or warp to?
I also got Geckos from CCP. They cost quite a bit for a 3 day noob like me. Should I sell them or keep them
