These days, I'll log on just to mostly run some security missions to get my shoot 'em up fix, mainly because my time is somewhat limited and I tend to go a bit antisocial. But really, the EVE universe is yours to do with as you will. Try it all at least once and roll with what sings to your soul.

Oh I most certainly will :) Ironically I'm getting messages from some folks looking at this thread. Who knew! I'm excited to get started exploring the gambit and seeing what all is out there, and I'm extremely appreciative of the time you guys have spent with me telling me about your stories. The link to the thread about how some veterans started out is really nice to read through. This'll be a great journey and I'm anxious to get started.

I too started life doing missions and trained up social/connections skills. But you'll find that once you are able to actually live outside of high-sec, you'll almost never touch missions again.

I agree with Solai on most points, but be very very cautious with any organization that recruits publicly.

The paradox of null-sec is that while newbie friendly corps "take anyone", they also trust no one. Because spies. In the anti-meritocracy abomination that is the CFC, you get in by being vouched for. There are also many corps (especially on the opposing team) that just want "pvpers". Those tend to be meritocratic, recruit publicly and look at statistics like killboard records.

Null-Sec is friendly to noobs. But our noobs, that we mould and groom in our image. The main difference and advantage between the noobs in null-sec and those in high-sec is the community that supports them. Short of E-Uni or Brave Newbies, one cannot come close to matching Goon welfare. To get into Sov null a newbie, you need connections.

Remember that whenever you have a bad day in EVE, the correct reponse is "Thank you CCP, may I please have another?"

To each their own; your thoughts on recruitment are valid. But I don't agree at all.

Every null-sec corp live with the same sorts of threats and pressures. Like spies and player churn. Two forces that pull in opposite directions - the former incentivizes insularity, and the latter incentivizes growth. But in the end, you can't stop player churn; if you are not growing as a corp, you're dying. It is likely a wonderful luxury to be able to continue a net gain on membership via invitation only, or other such exclusive means. But that's a rare luxury that can only be maintained by a few.

The vast majority of null-sec need and utilize open recruitment(with full API screening), advertising, and acceptance of the risk of spies. Your member count declines, otherwise. So to suggest that corps with public recruiting should be viewed with any extra scrutiny is not at all realistic. Connections are absolutely not necessary to get into the majority of significant/competent sov-null corps.

As for the anti-meritocratic comment, it seems your experience within the CFC is vastly different compared to my own - it's borderline nonsensical, in fact. I've only ever seen desperation for new, competent players to step up for existing openings. New blood growing into power and importance are something I see somewhat regularly.

But not enough - few people want to undertake the extra work, and make the game more like a job with every new role they take on.

I'll draw flak from other Eve players for saying it, but:
This is the real Eve - out in Null-Sec. This is the place the game shines most, and where all CCP's marketing actually rings true.
Leave high-sec as soon as you can.

I wish I could invest the time for this stuff. I'll stick to wormholes, low sec roams, and high sec griefing for now.
