Real life anti laser solutions. Would a mirror work?

Ok so in eve lore the minmatar attempted mirrors to thwart laser attacks hence the reflective shiny bits. The solar panels are apparently shield emitters instead from what I've heard. But in real life the military has laser weapons, not the star wars pew pew type, but more along the lines of a beam of light to burn things with.

Now I know it didn't work for the minmatar to use mirrors, but do you think it could actually work to use them? If a military truck shows up with a laser on top could you just toss a mirror of some sort in front of you and troll face? Or would the back of it heat up to much and make it ineffective anyways? Of course they still have guns to break it with, but I'm wondering if otherwise it could work?

Oh, I perfectly understand, Hal Morsh — a mission like this requires courage, skill, and heroism… qualities you are clearly lacking. Have you forgotten you're one of the bloody immortals!?

It depends on the energy and wavelength of the laser and the reflective properties of the material you used to "silver" your mirror. All reflective materials absorb some amount of light as heat, so with enough energy a laser could heat your mirror until it failed.

Shorter wavelength lasers would be preferable for doing this.

Mirrors would not work that well. They absorb some light and would still heat up heat up enough to melt/vaporize and if I recall correctly they don't reflect all of the Infrared spectrum either.

You would be better off with some extreme thermal shielding for your protection or a way to distribute and dissipate the heat.

Just taking a decent guess here. I'd like to see what someone that knows about this kind of stuff has to say about it.

Reflective surfaces should work.

If the target is a drone and 100 units of heat is required to build up the temperatures to disable it.

They aim a laser at it that outputs 150 units of heat. Except the drone is covered in a reflective material that reflects 90% of the beams light.

Now the drone is only receiving 15 units of heat and will remain operational.

In reality mirrors reflect a lot more than 90% and I doubt that the beams used have 50% more power than required to disable the target either.

Lasers just aren't common enough yet to motivate countermeasures.

That sounds like something Minmatars would do.

I'm betting their first attempt at a laser countermeasure was having someone stand on the outside of the ship. Waving a big stick to try and beat away the beams.

We really need to hurry up with missiling the Minmatar home worlds

Is there a verb for missile? I feel like there should be.

The very sun of heaven seemed distorted when viewed through the polarising miasma welling out from this sea-soaked perversion, and twisted menace and suspense lurked leeringly in those crazily elusive angles of carven rock where a second glance shewed concavity after the first shewed convexity.

You could if you could cool the mirrors, or redirect the heat.

I'm in it for the money

You're always pointing towards your profile face for situations mentioned in forums. The funniest one yet was "plucking out pubes one by one with tweezers".

On topic though. If someone used a mirror and no one had guns and bullets to break the mirror. Would they dare point the deadly laser at the mirror?

Maybe a gas canister with explosive clouds ignited by the lasers. That's a bit of a stretch actually..

Since I´m in a geek nerdy mode today, all I can say is that reading your thread made me think of Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday and their Aerosol Mist Grenades to thwart Laser weapons.
