Political correctness is killing us

Article link: Mel Brooks: My greatest film couldn't be made now
The comedy legend says he's lucky he shot "Blazing Saddles" 40 years ago

Quote:
"They can't make that movie today because everybody's so politically correct. You know, the NAACP would stop a great movie that would do such a great service to black people because of the N-word," says Brooks. "You've got to really examine these things and see what's right and what's wrong. Politically correct is absolutely wrong. Because it inhibits the freedom of thought. I'm so lucky that they weren't so strong then and that the people that let things happen on the screen weren't so powerful then. I was very lucky."

Yup. I read the article a few hours ago.

When the film is on broadcast TV, the N-word is bleeped and even the fart sounds are removed. They guys around the campfire, just sort of rise up and then sit down again silently in sequence, and it makes no sense at all.

I think the problem with the N-word and the other F-word is that they were just a part of ordinary conversation decades ago. But since the 60's these two words have only been used when hurled with other vitriol, to the point where any use of them is now considered spurious.

But even when the movie was released, Marlene Dietrich went quite public with her dissatisfaction with Madeline Khan's role. She was very "hurt". This points out how people just cannot seem to separate life from fiction. The whole movie is too absurd to be taken that seriously. I mean, back in the Old West, there was not even a Weimar Republic with it's unique stage productions in existence. IT's all just a fantasy (made obvious by the clearly visible facades in the Old West town.

It is a bizarre thing, but shows how fast social mores can indeed change.

About the only thing I find offensive concerns movies and TV shows before 1970.

It's astonishing the sheer number of ethnic roles that were portrayed by white actors. What's interesting is none of them were ever cast as black. Thank goodness. That aspect got taken care of early on. But they played Mexican, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, South Pacific, Arabic.....you name it. For some reason, they were "okay".

So many great movies are now ruined by this. Mickey Rooney as the "Asian House Help" in "Breakfast at Tiffanys". I mean, just look at that make-up.

And Alec Guiness as Faisal in "Lawrence of Arabia". Ugh.

And here is a lovely nice white "Indian Family" from "Bonanza".

It's just astonishing. It may have worked if these shows were comedies or something.

Its sad the amount of comedy we will miss out on because of this sue-happy society we now live in.

I don't see what the big deal is about that, sorry.

This quote sums up how I feel about this type of thing very well.

“It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so ******* what?”

I'm surprised you left out John Wayne as Genghis Khan

But then we had an outrage thread on this very forum over the black Annie. They could very well have ended up putting Johnny Depp in the role.

The real issue is the number of ethnic actors who aren't getting roles while the movie industry casts white people in the very same roles.

The very sun of heaven seemed distorted when viewed through the polarising miasma welling out from this sea-soaked perversion, and twisted menace and suspense lurked leeringly in those crazily elusive angles of carven rock where a second glance shewed concavity after the first shewed convexity.

Yep, PC crapolla. Just like I don't give a crud how many women they cast for star wars VII. Or why do I care what Nintendo does, that's their business. Even the NAACP can say stupid stuff if they want, as long as they don't shout fire in a movie theater. Say what you want, just remember, you can only have my gun when you pry it from my cold dead hand.

Yuppers. There's just sooooo many.

What's amazing is the entire cast and crew of "Genghis Khan" is dead from cancer except Gina Lollabridgida, who is apparently immune to radiation.

They shot the entire thing on the testing grounds in Nevada. The Golden turkey Awards book had a photo of Wayne and about 4 other guys standing around looking at a geiger counter and smiling and laughing. Can't find it on the web though.

So, you would have been OK if the miniseries "Roots" had an all white cast in black-face ??
