With 2013 firmly in the rearview mirror, the movers and shakers of the video gaming industry are focusing on where the next 12 months will take us.

I think the evolution of Video Gaming will be a three fold process involving first the Oculus VR head gear to be used with the hybrid PC to Console type gaming environment. For a sample check out Eve - Online and DUST514. Eve is a PC based Space MMORPG where DUST514 is a Console based FPS based on the Eve Universe. In both environments your actions affect the environment of the other. Now if CCP could only link up Eve Valkyrie which is a Space based SFPS (Ship First Person Shooter) then a new type of gaming environment would be present. I mean how awesome would it be to be able to pilot a fighter in FPS and come across a group of mining barges in null space that are part of the PC MMORPG and attack them. Both environments needing to be synced rather tediously to a special type of grind...but none the less exciting and a hell of a challenge to overcome.

I'm surprised they haven't blamed Obama for anything in the article.

Its CNN, they are just terrible, not really biased.

Also I stopped reading at VR being a mainstay in gaming. The tech is still relatively new and hasn't caught on, so similar to 3DTVs it will be something that will build hype but will die out or only be for a small market.

Its things like this that make my brain sad.

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

It's the reading of a CNN article I'm trying to wrap my head around.
I tried it once...never again.

Actually, if you watched one of the Keynotes from Fanfest, I'm pretty certain they said that this is the direction they're taking EVE and all related properties.

Hardly new. It was all the rage in the mid 90's. The tech wasn't up to the hype back then... It might just be now.

The failed Nintendo VR isn't what I would consider "all the rage", it failed miserably back then. It was definitely premature back then and still "might" be now. The tech isn't really the issue now, its more will it gain popularity and become mainstream enough to warrant companies investing into it. Which I doubt it.

I still recall playing MechWarrior 2 with VR goggles (didn't buy them, tried them out in a store), one of the few games where it worked like a charm.

It wasn't just Nintendo, there were several PC oriented headsets around. (I'd actually forgotten about the Nintendo VR.)

If my memory serves, it was the motion sickness which they tended to cause after a few minutes which killed them off. There was lots of initial hype, but when most people who try out your product feel like throwing up after a few minutes... you don't tend to get many customers.

Actually they predate that even. Mid-late 80's I had a GF that had a friend who had a VR headset (their son did). No kidding, it was a space shooter. Yeah it was vector graphics, but still 3d orientation and in a headset, and was pretty smooth actually. You would move around in a 3d spacial area and shoot space ships sort of like battle zone (old arcade game). They looked a bit like large binoculars.

So CCP is trying to create a trybrid (one more than a hybrid) system? Nice.

Is CCP looking into making certain aspects of all three environments actually 3D where glasses would need to be used to experience the environment similar to how you would view a 3D movie?
