Recruitment and API keys

So I've been gone a while, and in my recent return to eve I've discovered that if you are looking for a corp, every single corp you want to join now needs a full API key from you - ie: a backdoor into your account, all your mails, your finances, your implants and everything about you contained within.

When did it become normal to volunteer that kind of information to some neckbeard in the videogame? When you refuse to give it on principle people treat you like you have two heads, like you're hiding something. It seems people cannot comprehend that you don't want to volunteer a backdoor into your account to people you don't know any more than those people want to let you in without knowing a little more about you.

Even when I offer a kills-only API to show I don't kill corp mates, I'm still told to gtfo like I were some pariah. I find it really frustrating that this is now the norm and there doesn't seem to be much way around it. Even with references, 90 mil sp, FC ability, 9 mil sp in leadership etc. even small corps with 10 guys have told me to get lost because I would not give more than a kills-only API.

I wonder if CCP foresaw this when they expanded the API function a few years ago. That it is now the norm to bare all to strangers just to join their space-guild.

Odd.

When I joined the corp I'm in right now,
nobody asked me for an API ...

I accepted the contract.

Punished him publicly for this serious faux-pas,

Well because people are encouraged to play the villain, a lot of people do. So because corps instantly allow you to start ganking your corpmates, don't allow you to boot someone while they are in space, and offer some of the most primitive methods of setting up corp security, it's easier to just put in large limitations on who you recruit, leading off with making sure they are willing to give up all information about themselves.

Corporation stuff is in dire need of some love. Pretty much the way it works at the moment, it's great for encouraging villains, but it actively discourages teamwork for that very reason.

BTW, corps askign for API keys are nothing new. I remember having to provide my API key to a crop I joined in 2009.

500m if your public killboard is clear of shooting Goons. Otherwise it will be negotiable based on previous corp history.

APIs prove nothing

If your CEO asks for one, tell him to GFH

That is , after you AWOX his **** in for it

Whenever I join a corp that doesn't require full API keys they seem to lose lots of ships. There's few things as fun as warping to zero on an Orca and 5 hulks and going to town. Twisted

It's actually to your benefit that you join a corp that screens out people like me.

This.

The API key thing is just one of many annoyances causes by the inability to properly secure your corp. The result is the anti-social nature we see in high-sec today, where soloists run around in 1 man corps because they fear being AWOX'd in anything larger.

I think AWOX in theory is a great thing, but in practice it has far too many negative effects. Of course if you convince your CEO to give you access to BPOs I would always support such thefts. It's the mindless ability to kill corp mates or the unintuitive interfaces in dealing with in-corp hostilities that really needs a fix.

Whoops off-topic.

This is where you are not understanding things. There's no such thing as a backdoor into your account, there is absolutely nothing anyone can do with an API key that would cause any harm to your account. It merely provides in-game information. People want this info to prevent spies, awoxers, etc. They're not just asking because they're curious or nosy, they're protecting their membership. Don't like it? Don't join. It's that simple.

So what are you trying to hide, OP? I am a strong supporter of privacy in RL, but in EVE there is really no reason to not hand your API to a corp you want to join. Corps have to protect themselves from all kinds of infiltration and APIs are an easy way to do a background check. (Of course, they still doesn't prove anything if you separate your accounts thoroughly.)

Since when did it become customary to let in an ignorant noob into a decent corporation?

I like it how you actually try to blame CCP for this too. Maybe you should build your own corp instead, and ask for kill only APIs, see how far that gets you.

This is as nice as I get. Best quote ever https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=4137165#post4137165

I want to hide my trading methods, my shiptoasting alts, my private eve-mails to my friends in-game and my assets. And there's nothing wrong with that.

If you have multiple characters just send in the cleanest :P Corps often forget to ask for APIs on alts you bring in later, once you've proved you can be trusted Blink

Wallet transactions typically don't exist on characters which have been unsubbed for longer than 3 months (I'm not exactly sure on the timing). The simplest way to check your characters and what can be viewed is to generate full API keys yourself then use 3rd party tools to background check yourself.

In reality, most people who query full APIs genuinely do see it as an invasion of privacy. You can make a case to sympathetic recruiters to keep things like assets, mail and contact lists private, some corps do allow partial APIs. They're generally looking at other things - actually the majority of background checking is done via killboards, eve-who and forum searching anyway so the raw data (unless the character already looks dodgy) isn't all that useful.
