It is broadcast out. So hackers don't even need to know anything. When SSID is on, the owner tells the world: "Hey! Look here! Yes! Right here is a wifi AP!" That is why we turn it off. We don't want others to know that there is something that they might want to try to hack. So we turn off the SSID.
