Star Wars Casting: Where are the Women ??

Funnily enough one of the toughest female characters I've noticed in a Sci-Fi setting is Shan Frankland, in a series authored by a former SW writer (Karen Traviss). Portions of Prometheus looked to me to be lifted from that series. When she was informed her stuff would be treated as non-canon, despite a load of raging from fans - there's a very pragmatic statement somewhere on her website about it basically saying, it's done, calm down, cheque is in post, next v0v. I kind of like that, tough bird IRL by the looks of it, makes her characters and writing more credible.

It would be great if we could let writers, producers and filmmakers create without wearing our feelings on our sleeve.

There is enough whining out there of groups who think they are somehow owed something. Poor pity me, Im so different, let me flaunt it for the world to see.

Bottom line; You are not owed spit. Work hard, earn your way.

May I have everyone's attention please? We're evacuating into outer space with literally infinite directions in which to flee. However, we have decided that our transports will travel directly towards the fleet of stormtroopers. Any questions?

Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

Sydney Bristow was 13 years ago. Sure J.J. Abrams has created strong female characters in the past 10 years. Now who were they?

He is a cash machine for the industry, and can do no wrong.

So, we should all just end film criticism ? And all criticism ?

Yeah, right.

This is a film company working hard to bring us a piece of entertainment.

Who has said we are owed anything ?? We are discussing the short-shrifting of roles for women, especially in genre films.

I sure wish the makers of Terminator Salvation had run the entire script by us first, so as to avoid the financial disaster (and no further interest in the series) they got into with it.

I felt he made a fun, energetic lark with the first Trek film, but it showed in the 2nd one that he had indeed never seen an episode of ST before, not even the original series, ever.

That's not who I would hire to be in charge of that....at all.

I wonder if he even saw the original Star Wars ???

No we should not end criticism, constructive criticism can be a good thing.

However we should not expect to influence others work through a mob consensus of complaining.
The majority should not be allowed to impose it's will on the minority.

I disagree. As bad as Terminator: Salvation was, amongst other films. No one has a right to a film makers script if you are not directly involved in the project. And last time I checked the production of a movie production studio is a private business, not a community organizer project.

All entertainment works should succeed or fail on their own merit.

I'm sure that they have binders of women.
In walks Lindsay Lohan.
In walks Miley Cyrus.
In walks Jennifer Love Hewitt.
In walks Britney Spears.
Welcome to yet another Disney movie!

One would think a lack of actresses in this movie would be a good thing...

btw
Han shot first!
At least as I actually remember the 70's.

I can't think of any female characters in any of the Star Wars movies whom I found interesting. It's a shame that Portman, who played the little girl in Leon, was relegated to tagging along with the travesty Darth Vader character in Episode I-III.

Anyway, I'm more of a Star Trek fan. Star Trek has always had an enlighted view of women.

You should have linked the Seven-of-Nine picture when she still had the outfit she couldn't breathe in.

There are no women in Disney films. There are only Princesses and Bitches[1].

In a sense complaining about a lack of female stars actually smacks of "we need moar eye-candy" and is a bit insulting.

People want women (and minorities by extension) to have fair representation in film. They don't. It has nothing to do with "eye candy" and if it were then movies would be completely dominated by women.

Idk, the stepmother in Cinderella crosses the line into outright evil.

The first time my kid watched it was a few weeks ago, and her little 3 year old self got genuinely pissed when the stepmother locked Cinderella in her room towards the end.

She was yelling at the television and everything. Can't wait til we can get a copy of Sleeping Beauty.

Whenever people try and tell me that "people want this" about that kind of thing (typically while trying to say the Wonder Woman movie should ever see daylight), I point them at Catwoman.

Nuff said.
