Character will exist forever.
Well, not "forever", CCP MIGHT delete some very very inactive characters after a very very long time.
I'm talking 5 years + of not logging in.

CCP wouldn't ever completely destroy your account/characters simply for being inactive. If you're no longer playing, THEY WANT YOU TO COME BACK! Destroying your toons would convince you not to.

The only motivation to delete old/inactive accounts is to clean up the database, the same goal can be achieved by simply archiving old accounts that could be retrieved upon re-activation. There is no practical reason or motivation for them to destroy accounts/characters.

If your friend was only on a trial account, those may get wiped after a certain point. However non-trial accounts I have never heard of them deleting.

Considering your character information isn't that big to begin with, they could have hundreds of thousands of inactive players and it wouldn't change it because space wise your account is mostly just info on your characters, and a list of assets, nothing more. It is unlikely they need to delete accounts, if anything they would just archive them like mentioned before.

Just posting to share my experience here.

I started a trial account in 2007, and never subbed. Flash forward to a couple months ago, I was able to provide enough information for CCP to find the account, and they reactivated it! I subbed it purely for the nostalgia factor.

Point is, your account is probably still there.

Be sure to make a note of the names of the characters on your accounts and the email that the account is attached to if you decide to take a break from the game.

You would be surprised that after a three year break you may forget exact spellings of names and may have canceled old email accounts and be unable to retrieve information.

I got back my three old accounts recently but for two of them it took quite a bit of digging around to remember all the important information that is needed to restore an old account.

I've been playing since '06 and never heard of an account getting wiped.

Forced name changes and bans? That's another story.

Signatures should be used responsibly...

I took a four year break, could not remember all my game details, but CCP were most helpful in getting my account active again.

This is not a signature.

Accounts are left as-is, so your characters will be in the same condition when you return as when you left. EVE itself might be different, if your character was docked in a 0.0 station you may come back to them and find the station has changed hands(multiple times even) for example.

Your friend can file a ticket for assistance in locating the account if they're running in to difficulty locating it. Either through the website (http://community.eveonline.com/support/support-tickets/) or by emailing support@eveonline.com

I don't recall us having wiped inactive accounts at any point though.

It's just their word I'm going on, TBH. IIRC they filed a ticket which ended up resolving nothing as the associated account information didn't exist anymore (IIRC).

Also, they had Freighters or JF (don't remember which) trained to V, so it definitely wasn't a trial account.

I can to attest to having recovered a Char that i thought was lost and that had been inactive for over 9 years.

get your stuff to highsec, Sov of course changes and you can get locked out or locked in, take down any pos's, the new changes in industry might make some systems very competitive for space, any clones in null will probably get cancelled contracts, that's not a big problem but they may go places inconvenient for you, corporate hangers and wallets are vulnerable also. transfer assets into plex, it seems to only appreciate while ships do stupid things in accord with developers whims instead of demand or inflation.

Was that account bought on eBay?
