Winter is Coming (if you like late night TV)

It is quite seldom in recent years that my orbit in life is perturbed by that which usually passes as "entertainment" on American television. This would be an exception.

Yesterday in very serious news, Mr. Craig Ferguson: Scotsman, Actor, Author, Comedian, American immigrant, Punk rock drummer, recovered alcoholic, and personal friend and bandmate of Peter Capaldi (Who?) announced he would be leaving the Late, Late Show on CBS in December after hosting for 10 years.

IMHO, never in the history of entertainment has a humble man influenced such a wide audience leveraging scant more than a badly lit studio, a few hand puppets, harmonica, a horse costume, willing interns, and a cheeky homosexual robot skeleton. Craig's "cold open" 2-5 minute monologues at the beginning of every show are often described as the best thing on television for the entire day, and he often and repeatedly says out loud (regardless of network censorship) what his audiences and guests are thinking. His unique interview style has world celebrities of all kinds lining up to appear on his show.

Craig regularly and honestly shares details of his own past substance abuse and recovery with his audience, and instituted a policy of refusing to exploit (for laughs) on his show, popular celebrities and individuals who are in the news that are suffering the same, or mental difficulties. This has gained Craig a level of respect within the entertainment industry and with his fans that may never be equaled.

There are at least 100 shows remaining before he moves on to do other things, and his show is broadcast in several countries outside of the US. If you have never watched The LLS, you still have a chance before it is gone. If you are already a fan, you know we are in for a treat as less and less fucks will be given by Craig as he pushes the line of what you can do on late night television all the way to the wall.

There's a million angry citizens looking down their tubes..at me.

Firstly I can not believe it has been 10 years. I first became aware of his humour from the Drew Carry Show and i have enjoyed his comedy ever since.

I very much agree with everything you said. It is a great show that I do not watch fresh. I have seen much after the fact. He has brilliant commentary and he is one of the last bastions of journalistic integrity.

He's brilliant !

But the TV executives are not, having relegated him to the 12:30 AM - 1:30 AM time slot.

So, I've only seen the show 2 or 3 times.

I've never understood why these talk shows cannot be on in Prime Time.

That's the slot he auditioned for. David Letterman owns the show as a part of his own contract renegotiation many years ago.

A lot of people DVR the show.

As-is Craig's show would not work in an earlier time slot on network TV. If you ever saw the TV edited version of Pulp Fiction or Snakes on a Plane you start to understand why. Conan is on cable where he can say/do just about anything, and is still far more tame.
