Question About Crew

I just started playing EVE and I've gotten myself pretty immersed in the game's fiction, though I haven't gotten through all the Chronicles and short stories just yet.

As I play I often find myself wondering about the crew on board my ship. Some of the ships in EVE are pretty massive and I would imagine they have a massive crew to match.

But as I understand it, the Captain/Capsuleer controls all the functions of the ship from his capsule. Weapon systems and navigation seem to be heavily computerized or automatic. So what purpose does the crew serve? Apart from damage control and other maintenance I can't really think of why they're on board.

So my questions are:

How much crew do EVE vessels have? (frigates, destroyers, cruisers etc.)

And what jobs do they preform? (Gunnery Officer, Mechanics, Science, Medical etc.)

That's a very interesting resource but it doesn't really answer my question.

Well we know at least one of the roles for the crew in our ships is that of Engineers as stated in the Hands of a Killer chronicle. I'd imagine there would be many roles to be filled, pretty much anything that required hands-on intervention/interaction within the ship.

So something like the following with the likelihood being greater the larger the ship:
- Command staff
- Intel officer or group
- Engineers
- Cooks
- Maintenance staff
- Cleaners (depends if it is assigned to regular crew or not)
- Cargo bay workers
- Security team/s (against ship boarding parties)

This is of course not an exhaustive list but if you concider the size of some of the ships then it's easy to see where they would require a multitude of crew in many diverse roles just to keep them fully functional.

Nex (Cash Shop) / Aurum - removing sand from the sandbox since Incarna. Currently the only use for aurum is to buy virtual items in the in-game store, but Cockerill expects to expand its uses in the future.

Does anyone know any numbers for how many crew members are on EVE's ships?

I believe it's mentioned in one of the earlier Chronicles that frigates are commanded solely by the Capsuleer.

Destroyers, judging by the size seem like they may have crew members numbering in the tens - hundreds while cruisers seem like they may have thousands aboard.

Can anyone confirm these numbers?

DId you even open Jowen's link?

It has general crew size brackets for most shiptypes.

okay, so what's always bothered me about this table is the ''minimum crew (capsuleer)'' column...
shuttle 0
frigate 1-3
destroyer 6-20
etc etc...

am i reading this right? a frigate can have up to 3 capsuleers aboard? and a destroyer needs a minimum of 6 aboard?

goes against every one of the "one capsuleer per ship" meta-rules ive run into so far.

/me shakes her head in an attempt to shift paradigms without a clutch... Shocked

EDIT

/sudden dawning realization

ok, i get it now... the column is for minimum crew aboard a capsuleer ship, not the minimum number of capsuleers aboard...
i feel like a complete doofus...

/facepalm

Thus Spake the Frigate Goddess!

I remember quite a while back, a sort of article series about crew during an Alliance tournament, it's well past my bedtime so I cba to properly hunt for them, but here's something to get you started...

In short, anything that you as a capsuleer doesn't control or can't do, your crew controls and does. Cleaning, maintenance, life support systems e.t.c and of course the support staff for those crew as well.

However I have heard that capsuleer frigates have no crew. I don't remember the article but I do remember it being mentioned as the benchmark for capsule technology.
