FCs are the admirals of EVE Online. They give their orders and expect to be listened to. The best fleet commanders are known throughout the EVE Universe and spoken of in reverent terms. In this week's Community Spotlight, I was able to speak with a few of the different FCs throughout EVE and asked them about the experience.

I need to get back into fleet operations (RL in the way too much). I used to call myself the Fleet Secretary (typed all the FC commands into fleet chat) for folks like Makalu and Manfred Sideous (hi Manny!) which was useful in fleet with many people where English wasn't their first language, or where the FC's accent was a hinderance (Russians Roll), or when we had the occasional deaf player (that was a real shock to me).

Sad

Gotta say I'm a bit disappointed with this Community Spotlight along with a few of the past ones as well.

A Community Spotlight is supposed to acknowledge a specific player for their helpful contribution to the Eve Online Community. Mainly to thank them for all the time and work they've conducted out of game to achieve something that is both helpful and beneficial to players in-game...

Doesn't matter if those player names are from the past or currently active here in the present, I believe each and every one of them should be individually praised by this Community Spotlight series.

Ugh

Not to be a **** or anything but that looked like you just gathered together a bunch of low tier fleet commanders with very limited experience and knowledge.

Everyone will have favorites, but articles like these serve more than one audience. This is a great, wide-ranging article covering multiple aspects of what it is like, what it takes to be an FC in EVE. I've forwarded it on to some of my non-EVE friends. "+1" CCP Eterne.

FC's create communities, maybe not the wide reaching social media frenzy that is twitter, or vocal on FH, BC, or this forum, but every corporations have a few key FC's who are at the heart of that small community, these small cells form larger alliances, form the people that are in space defending you, or shooting you, giving you a reason to be here as part of the wider community.

I might not know all of the names on that list, but I respect each of them for stepping up and taking others out to fight.

I'm sure everyone one of us that has played this game for a while can name a few worthy ones themselves, many won't ever try to step into that spotlight, preferring to remain quietly in the shadows, pushing their community forwards.

Do not for a moment try to take anything away from those that are mentioned here, all FC's no matter how good are valuable members of the wider EVE community and deserve all the recognition they can get.

/soapbox.

My reply was directed at CCP Eterne and was not intended to disrespect the players listed in the Dev Blog. I'm sure they are all good players who do their best to help their fleets win. Also why stop there? How about doing a Spotlight on a few select players who do Logistics or Scouting, Tackle, etc. They are all just as important as the FC, right?

Anyway, in my opinion each of those Fleet roles are filled with players doing what they like to do in game which is only beneficial to players who are fleeted with them in game. That's it, nothing more.

Which is exactly the point of my original reply, they're just playing the game. They haven't spent countless hours out of game researching and developing something that's beneficial to the majority of the Eve Online Community.

As such I still stand by my original reply :

I agree with Anabaric, more W0wbagger was needed.

Got me thinking of past FC's I have flown with. Jarkaruus with Manifest Destiny was absolutely fantastic. Also flew with a guy called Relentless Jim who would have made a great FC but always seemed to shy away from the limelight despite having great knowledge and command. Good times with great people.

Thanks for this thread, It's nice to think back over your Eve career and recall those guys you won and lost with.
