Kiting cruisers

What t1 cruiser hulls make good kiting ships? Both to dps small ships and not lack firepower for larger ships. So far iv come up with a rail thorax and an arty/ac stabber. However iv never actually flown any kiting cruiser and would like to know which is more practical or if something else entirely is better (iv heard of the omen but that it isnt any good, thoughts?)

Shield Omen is a lot of fun. Great DPS and tracking all the way to the edge of point range. Tank is paper and the ship is slightly slower than some of the alternatives, though.

My advice: Try them all (Caracal, Stabber, Omen, Thorax).

Furthermore, I think that links must be removed from the game.

The Osprey Navy Issue is a lot faster than the CNI, and its damage bonus goes really well with RLML style anti-frigate fits.

I'm enjoying Rails Thorax at the moment.

Just have to make sure you have a way to deal with frigates too, because they can orbit faster than your tracking if they get in close. Warriors and EC-300s work well for frigates and then rely on good DPS at range to beat Cruisers. Destroyers aren't really much match on their own either at range or in close so you can beat them most times.

Our fleet fought a kiting omen once. His scorch killed our inty tackle and got the trailing AF tackle in deep structure before we blapped him with the rest of the fleet.
Not sure if killmails are allowed to be posted but this is his fit: https://zkillboard.com/kill/38206041/
He was so squishy for an amarrian cruiser it was unbelievable. My kiting caracal sure is tankier but slower compared to the omen.

Shield Rail Thorax. flies like a cheap Navy Exeq or Rail Deimos
MAAR Scorch Omen, flies like a cheap NOMEN
Shield Arty Rupture, flies like a fat and cheap Cynabal

I just made some videos pvping in t1 cruisers for the last few weeks and they were the best for kiting for me. Keep 20-40km kill frigs and squishy **** that burns for scram or separates from enemy blob then finish off what is left if you can. I would also stay away from the Caracal, Osprey Navy, and Caracal Navy just because medium missiles are ******* terrible but that's just me.

An Omen with a Medium Ancillary Armour Repairer (plus EANMs and nano pump/accelerator rigs usually).

Word of warning, it's only really effective with scorch, which means T2 guns.

People don't really expect an Omen to move at 2K+. It's a lot of fun.

I'm guessing it's using nano's then.

Well, with the current Meta, ... yeah, it has Nanos, cause your only chance to stay away from certain death is creating the biggest possible difference in Speed between you and your target - and if they are faster then you, the goal is to minimize that delta V. The longer they take to get on top of you, the longer you can hit them in the face, and the more choices you have to disengage.

Correct.
I usually go EANM X 2, heatsink X 2, nano and repper.

I mean, you could trade a heatsink for a nano, which brings you to almost 2.4K, but your DPS is already pretty anaemic.

Yes but we all know your bad Mixu.

Loljk.

@OP Rail Rax is a personal favourite of mine, decent tracking enough mids for counter tackle and good projection with rails, I run an AAR tanked version with 200 Rails myself.

Rails and Beams have better DPS and projection than blasters and pulses right now (medium sizes). The recent balance pass literally destroyed the Range:DPS ratio

They still suffer from bad tracking. So tbh it seem to be quite balanced. Especially compared to how medium rails and beams were before.

The tracking is surprisingly less of an issue than expected. Nothing short of interceptors with MWD's will cause you serious issues if you can overheat to 2k/s+ and zero tranvsveral. 2/3 Volleys leaves frigs running for the hills.

Getting tackled at 0 on a gate though leaves you 100% reliant on drones... but ever since the web nerfs that was ALWAYS the case (hence blaster tracking buffs years ago).

Ships fighting in a vacuum (ho ho ho, very punny) lets you argue about tracking - but on small gang fights the distances covering in *seconds* by cruisers instantly destroys transversal tanking on anything that isn't focussing you. At that point it's your gang members job to burn away and zero your tracking to volley tacklers off of them.

It really is as simple as this: Drop the close range for the long range and try it. Most people will love the increased damage application to great ranges (hell, MF on beams has ~17k opti with no shop bonus... scorch can't keep up.)

MF > Scorch = X-Ray-beams > Aurora imo.
