Id say no

And, isn't sanity really just a one-trick pony anyway? I mean all you get is one trick, rational thinking, but when you're good and crazy, oooh, oooh, oooh, the sky is the limit.

So, last year at Fanfest I asked the guys what they were not getting from CCP that would allow them to finish the project and they said that they got what they needed when they needed it [words to that effect]. There was also no firm date as to when it would be delivered.

My experience in the software business made me feel queasy about their answers. Software projects have deliverables and deadlines. Revenue projections depend on that.

Well, that they were unable to share a date with you didn't mean they didn't have a date in mind. While project management might have been an issue with WoD, it wasn't necessarily the key issue, for a few reasons.

The very best game developers rely on extreme iteration to get the right experience out of the game. This is a project that has been iterated on repeatedly, restarted from scratch at least once, and (from the delay between the announcement of the write-off to today's layoffs) most likely fully re-evaluated for whether another restart made sense.

It's sad that it wasn't working, but all that time and all those restarts say to me that they gave the various iterations of the project ample opportunity to make something that had an inkling of their vision in it. In a perfect world, they'd have something else lined up and ready to go immediately, but a new project starts with 5 people, not 50.

My heart goes out to those developers who were affected, it's always a trauma to be laid-off and have one's project canceled, particularly since they were just hiring people for WoD as recently as the last year. Hopefully they can find as many spots as possible elsewhere in the company.

To the employees laid off. I wish you good luck and good hunting.

To the people who were looking forward to the game, I am sighing with you.

PLEASE use the assets, the environments, and the sexy costumes in EvE!

CCP! Don't let those assets go to waste. It's all Carbon, right? So use them in ambulation. You've gone exactly NOWHERE with ambulation since Incarna... so why not roll with the punches and use WoD for EvE?!

It's better than the nothing we have now...

What say you?

I really wanted WoD Online to be a thing, too. I was a fan of VtM before Eve had even seen the light of day. :\

I hope the devs that got laid off find work again quickly.

Why do people insist on pretending that they know what's going on?

- CCP Falcon did not want to go into rumors before the actual information has been personally discussed with the people affected by it. Would you want to find out you're being fired via Reddit or via the people you work for? It's a simple matter of courtesy which is blown way over proportion.

- WiS was not the reason for the 2011 riots, Greed is Good was. More than enough people still want WiS as long as it fits into EVE properly and personally i hope the WoD assets and tools find their way into a new plan for WiS.

- Carbon is a framework, not a ready-to-use engine like UE3 or CryEngine. It's a collection of ALL the code EVE runs on, aswel as shared code like the website, API and server code between Dust/Valkyrie/WoD. It's basically an effort to codify and refactor all the ancient code from 2000 to get it all documented, and make it easier to use. Carbon is here to stay and that's a good thing.
FYI: The actual 3D engine for EVE is Trinity (inhouse), the engine for Dust is UE3 and the engine for Valkrie is Unity (unless that changed).

If you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all...

So CCP likely could use all the assets from WOD to add to dress up in Eve. I'd love to see this data though, how many folks ever change their clothes? I'd probably take the time to figure out how to change what I'm wearing if I could get a corp or alliance logo-ed shirt, but just to be able to stare at me in any of the clothes released to date is very "not current Eve" to me. So long as my character is just me in my captain's coffin I'd rather just try and set a personal ship spinning record for each ship I own. Maybe better TV in my room would make me turn my room back on but seriously, who really cares about character clothes in current Eve??

1st degree miss management year after year,
steps made in EVE which raged the community and which needed a public appolagy,
Darkness MMO now being a waste of time and resources.

DUST another faillure to happen specialy as the game is bound to the PS3 console.

finances that fail

This is one of the best decisions CCP has made in years. Fearless without execution doesn't work.

I agree with everyone above asking for the clothing assets to be moved over from WoD to EVE. It will fit in just fine here.

First you have to get a good idea to iterate on, because iteration on failed thing will get the thing you develop only where CCP put WOD, in the bin.
Take flappy bird, and then take WOD and compare two games.

I was really looking forward to this. back in 2006 I almost fainted when I've learned about this project. Paper and pen WOD RPG games were my bread and butter when I was younger. Good times.

Somehow I have no hard feelings against CCP. I'm just really sad.

Maybe use the assets and release Single player game? :-)

You can not invest long term projects on temporary fads. During the hey-day of Twilight and the such, such a game would have seemed do-able. But by the time you get around to releasing it, the fad is long over.

Space based Sci-fi however has been around since the 1940s and isnt going away.

Unfortunately, this is the kind of messy outcome that is to be expected when a company has poor direction. A hard pill to swallow for those who lost their jobs. In retrospect, if so much resources were being spent on this project, perhaps this is good news now for the EVE universe, which has been left ticking-over for far too long. Cosmetic updates to one or two ships each expansion simply aren't going to cut it anymore, core game mechanics (namely sov & POS mechanics) are in need of a huge overhaul, and have been for years.

CCP needs to get its act together and really devote all focus onto Eve.

I've been thinking this for quite a while, and it seems they are going in the right direction, but progress just seems to be too slow with the threat of games like Star Citizen on the horizon.

It won't take much for subscriber numbers to take a massive drop when a proper sci fi simulator MMORPG is released, something which has been sorely lacking from the games market, and instead of complacency Eve should really be stamping its authority, building barricades, and generally making it impenetrable to any other game attempting to step into this niche.

Right now eve will look like a kids toy compared to some of the sci fi simulators possible in the future, they really need to step their game. At the foundation, we still have the same old submarine simulator which we had back in 2003, which is not as much progress as should have been made in 10 years.

With respect, EVE is not in a good place itself, and thats the reason I pay CCP, so I'm glad WoD has been cancelled.

My hope would be that CCP realize exactly how flawed and weak a position EVE is in, and take the long LONG overdue steps to correct it.

The would include:

1. Comprehensive Sovreignty System Re-Write & Revision.
2. Comprehensive PvE Overhaul and Content Expansion.
3. Comprehensive POS System (and Code) Rewrite and Revision.
4. Mining, Moon-Mining and Industrial/Science Re-write and Revision.
5. Completion of the literally DOZENS of unfinished content additions in EVE.

These are not minor issues, minor quibbles or minority viewpoints.

It about time CCP take these issues serously, and make a serious effort to get them completed.

Be assured CCP, as time (and tech) marches on, and the Sci-Fi Simulator idea gets looked at by other companies, your failure to keep up, to finish things you start, or to take seriously your "endgame", both PvP (Sov.) and PvE, will surely be you demise.

And the fact you seem incappable of expanding your IP beyond EVE, you should really be wary of the discontent with the status quo of half-finished content and broken POC, Mining, Industry and Sov. systems you currently have in place.

I WANT you to succeed, I've given you alot of money over the years.

But YOU have to want it too, and stop seeing everywhere other than EVE as the place to invest, when EVE is why you all have jobs in the first place.

Good luck.
