Deepcover Assignment

Being a terrorist was no where near as romantic as the passions of youth an inexperience can portray it in your mind. Sometimes weeks and months go by as you embed yourself into a new environment so that you get to complete your assignment against the evil Amarr empire and their allies. Usually that time was spent disguised as a low end manual laborer so that you could become almost invisible to the empire's security apparatus. This mission fit that profile all too well, five months serving as a janitor in Jita, cleaning toilets, scrubbing disposal units, and serving as a porter for the well financed baseline merchants that used the Caldari trading hub as their business address to interface with the capsuleers who had become masters of interstellar commerce throughout New Eden.

Tiberius Heth had a name that was very similar to the former Caldari head of state Tibus Heth so it always caused a brief moment of discomfort when any Caldari official checked his ID, and it explained why his name tag said “Tee Bone” a nickname far easier to live with they always laughingly agreed. Tee Bone had been planted in Jita to gain access to the merchants that were supplying the capsuleer pilots of the Caldari militia that were actively involved in combat activities against the Gallente & the Minmatar militias in contested sections of low security space. To act against the capsuleers directly was pointless, if you even were successful enough to assassinate one they would more then likely be reanimated into a brand new clone body and if you had killed one far enough away from his or her pod no doubt a significant number of his or her corp mates would go to great lengths to hunt you and your family members down and provide painful and violent ends to your lives, so capsuleer killing was a sport for people with far greater skill sets then those Tee Bone possessed.

Gathering data was what he did most, blessed with a photographic memory he had no need to write down anything he observed that was relevant to his missions. The list of names he would see on shipping orders and who had signed off on their transit and delivery, and who was assigned to handle the shipments spoke volumes to him. Tee Bone knew who on the station worked on munitions handling, medical supplies, ore & minerals, so casual conversations in the presence of others could supply him with facts as to what was going on in the station in other departments and when he was off shift.

His current status as a poor Caldari citizen made his not too insistent inquiries about what his co-workers did perfect cover for gathering details under the guise of wanting to know how much the payment or salary was for what they did, what kind of training would he need to get that kind of job, and was there any part time work available now. Tee Bone was known as a guy who would almost always be available to cover shifts for other workers even in other departments if the pay was legit and over the table, he made it clear that he'd do nothing shady that would get him in trouble with the law. Rakon Kim was a supervisor of munitions handling and he had noticed Tee Bone's work ethic and reliability. When an opening due to promotion and transfer became available his first thought was of Tee Bone, getting that big muscled hard working grunt on his team would certainly boost it's productivity. It was the dinner break for the evening shift and Tee Bone was sitting with the other janitors eating his meal from the back pack that he carried it in everyday, smiling and chatting contentedly, the fact that he never bought food from the commissary and opted to pack his own meals indicated to most how tight his budget was and how seriously he was intent upon finding better paying legitimate employment. When Rakon motioned for him to join him at his table Tee Bone excused himself, gathered his things and joined the supervisor at his table.

Rakon Kim
Tee Bone, please sit down, I have a job
offer for you, if you are interested.

Tee Bone
Mr. Kim I am always interested in
additional shifts if you have any available.

Rakon Kim
I am offering you a chance to move up & transfer
to my department on a full time basis. I can't promise
you'll have two consecutive days off because we work
six day weeks with plenty of available overtime.

Tee Bone
That would be terrific Mr. Kim.
What would my starting rate be?

Rakon Kim
It is about two and one half times what you
are making right now, and with the border wars
going on we have never been busier.

Tee Bone

When can I transfer Mr. Kim? I'd like to accept.

Rakon Kim
Good, good I was hoping you'd agree. I have spoken
with janitorial and they have approved an immediate
transfer. You can begin at 0400 tomorrow, a standard
12 hour shift.

Tee Bone
Thank you very much Mr. Kim, this means a lot to
me. I am saving with the hopes of getting married one
day and being able to support a family with my work
here on the station.

Rakon Kim
Well I can say for sure unless you want to live like an
extravagant Gallente, working in munitions will
afford you and a spouse a good lifestyle. I sent my
oldest son to university with employment here
before I was promoted to supervisor. So it can be
done if you keep yourself on budget and work as
many extra shifts as you can handle.

Tee Bone
I'm not afraid of long hours or hard work Mr.
Kim. I promise you I'll make you and the corp
glad you hired me into munitions sir.

Part Two

Rakon & Tee Bone spent the balance of their meal break talking about a future trajectory for a career in the Jita station trading hub. Rakon sought to impress him with the list of important corps that relied upon his department to keep them armed and ready to fight. Tee Bone knew his next report back to Drake Ashigaru Alliance would not be transmitted for another 45 days and his handlers would be very pleased that he now was a full time employee in the munitions handling department.

Three months later:

The agent they had planted in the Jita trading hub station was paying dividends, in the last three weeks alone they had targeted over two hundred families of those intimately involved in the weapons and ammunition supply to the Caldari militia. Bombings and street assassinations made for splashy headlines and since Drake Ashigaru Alliance never sought public credit for their actions, as an entity, law enforcement had not a clue as to who they were. In the media they were attributed as “Gallente” terrorists and nothing more. To the survivors of their attacks they identified themselves as retribution for the deaths their relative's actions in the arms trade had wrought upon them. Slowly almost organically the word began to spread that the families of those involved in the arms trade were no longer safe in the Caldari state. The threat was real and not exclusive to those in the higher echelons of society, every class of person from janitors & dock workers to executives & investors had been targeted.

Although those involved in the arms business in the Caldari state did not immediately en mass resign and start careers doing something else the program was having it's desired effect, wage increases had spiked across the boards for those people working for arms manufacturers, which in turn meant their profits were taking a hit. After a group of senior citizens who had their retirement funds entangled with arms stocks had been viciously murdered casual investment income was down by thirty percent in arms related stocks. The simple notes left behind were always of the same theme “Those who deal death shall be dealt the same!”. It was a unique terrorist campaign because it was so narrow and targeted in who it singled out, the media in it's zeal to capture headlines and viewer/ readers was the main way knowledge of their activities and the fear it engendered spread across the Caldari state.

To insure they were not back tracked the information gathered by the undercover agents was never directly acted upon, instead a secondary investigation of the family relations and the contacts of those signing for and ordering arms supplies for the militia were tracked and targeted. So if your brother or mother worked in the arms business supplying the Caldari militia you became a prime target. Needless to say it caused tension in the families of those employed in the Caldari arms industry from top to bottom. Since the “Death Dealers Dealt Death” campaign began over seventy thousand Caldari citizens had been assassinated, a very small number when compared to their general population but the private neocom site that tracked the deaths linked by the cryptic notes left behind or mailed to the families afterward, Death Dealers Dealt Death nicknamed Double Double Dee, had over 18 million visits a week, and the blogger who had started tracking the assassinations had become a rising star on the neocom.

Joachim Sandovsker had a solid background in journalism but had never been able to land the really good career starting job that he wanted so he began blogging about the crime rates and the unsolved murders that were a natural statistical inevitability based upon population size, economic issues, and a myriad of other societal, genetic, and psychological triggering factors. He had developed good contacts withing law enforcement and never ever made them look bad, quite the opposite he publicly spoke of expanding police powers to stem the rise in all types of crime. It was a stroke of luck that had alerted him to the “Death Dealers Dealt Death” campaign, a suspect in another unsolved murder had become collateral damage in a bombing assassination of an arms dealer's sister and brother in law. Joachim had been close enough to the bombing to arrive before the law enforcement officials had completely cordoned off the area, and had captured on vid the cryptic notes left behind “Those who deal death shall be dealt the same!”, and the gallows humor comment by an investigating officer of “Death Dealers Dealt Death” had a certain grim charming ring to it, he even named the neocom site after the comment. In the ensuing months he had become a standard feature on vidcasts as an expert on the Gallente terrorist campaign against the arms industry, and he had a book deal in the final stages of negotiations that would en capsulize his findings to date. His strongest detractors were of course the PR people of the arms industry who claimed he was conflating unrelated events and possibly copy cat crimes into one grand conspiracy without any real tangible proof. But the louder they protested his conclusions the more people noticed the facts themselves.

It was the strangest turn of events that found Joachim Sandovsker strolling around the munitions handling department with Rakon Kim conducting background information interviews on employees in the arms industry.

Joachim Sandovsker
So Rakon you have no concern about
your safety here in Jita keeping the brave
and loyal capsuleers armed to defend the
Caldari State?

Rakon Kim
Well I am neither fool nor hero, of course
I have concerns, who wouldn't these days
but as a Caldari I have to do my small part
to help keep the State safe so we show up
and just do our jobs the best we can.

Joachim Sandovsker
Is it becoming difficult to retain employees
and get new hires to work here?

Part Three

Rakon Kim
A few of our senior people have opted for
early retirement, but the new people replacing
them seem to be focused on making their
careers here so I'd have to say in the final
analysis, the terrorist have failed to scare
off Caldari workers, we don't turn tail
and run easily.

Joachim Sandovsker
Thank you for your time Mr. Kim.
I am sure your words will encourage
all of us Caldari to stand up a little
taller against the terror campaign
being waged against the State by the
enemies of the Caldari people.

Two weeks after the neocom broadcast of the Rakon Kim interview his son and daughter in law were assassinated in a bombing at the school of his only grandchild who also was a victim. Rakon Kim quit his supervisory job and signed up to crew on a militia vessel that was patrolling the areas being disputed by the Gallente, unfortunately his destroyer was ambushed by a roaming gang of capsuleer pirates and he did not live long enough to even know what hit him. The destroyer jumped into a gate camp and was destroyed in under a minute by the concentrated fire power focused upon it. Tee Bone was promoted to assistant supervisor responsible for the night shift, his handlers were extremely satisfied with how things had turned out. Joachim Sandovsker said he completely understood when Tee Bone the new supervisor that replaced Rakon Kim had declined to do an interview with him.
