Torp Golem v cruise Golem

So I've been running L4s in my golem for a few weeks now and I think it's fantastic.. One thing is niggling me however. When I first begun training for the Golem all I saw was torpedo fits. I went for cruise but I was wondering.. what is the point of torpedoes?

Are they worth using at all? I understand they're much shorter range and no one seems to use them in PvE(as far as I've seen). Am I missing something? Are they worth training for?

Thanks

Even with the bonus the Golem gets the range is still pretty short. On most ships that wouldn't be an issue but since the marauders party trick is to lock itself in one place using Bastion it quickly gets frustrating unless you are fighting NPC's that like to get to close range e.g. Angels.

It was sort of borderline between them for a while then CCP gave Cruise missiles a boost. Torps give a lot of paper dps but applying it isn't easy, I much prefer the versatility cruise offers.

The "in between" choice is to use cruise Fury ammo which normally results in huge damage application issues but the golem makes it work. Kinda the same deal with the CNR; on paper the normal Raven and CNR have the same dps but the CNR can use Fury ammo and perform.

Most of the fits that you saw were prior to the introduction of the Bastion Module, and associated Rebalance of Marauders. Golems used to be a pretty mobile platform AB or MWD with Torps was fairly common.

I am using Cruise my self and it does the jobb without any problem, used torps before bastion module was released.
But it's easier to apply dmg to smaller targets with cruise , switch between fury and precision and use target painters.

Most people switched to CM fittings last summer with the changes to cruise missiles, because the better damage application, nearly the same dps outside of 40km and the much easier handling. The Golem wasn't that mobile to begin with(one of her major downsides that never got addressed over the years and was completely ignored by the devs, like so many other issues with the other marauders, in favour of the pointless overtaking module and mjd nonsense), the Bastion changes just made it worse in this regards by further limiting the mobility in mwd fittings.

Cruise Golem is much better IMO. Torpedos might get higher paper dps, but you'll have trouble with damage application. Lots of target painters. And if you're out of range you have to wait and/or fly closer, which means lost dps.

Don't really want to start a new thread, but how does Cruise Golem compare to a HAM tengu?

What kind of DPS/Range does a cruise Golem get? Since it doesn't speed tank like my tengu, can it mount enough tank to sit like a brick and still fit 2-3 target painters?

My tengu gets 1k dps at ~35km range and has 2x target painters fit.
700m/s gets me in range pretty fast.

I have Marauder V and at the moment use my Paladin vs EM weak missions, my tengu vs kinetic weak missions, and my rattlesnake when I get bored.

If only there were programs that let you make put fits in them and get statistics....

992 DPS for the Golem out to 118km/150+km (sensor range versus max range) versus 966 for the Hamgu. In terms of time to kill (TTK) they're about equivalent with a slight edge to the Hamgu, but the Golem's drones probably even things out.

Tank is fine with a Pithum C-type MSB + bastion. You may need to use the MJD on a few missions if you overdo the triggers and/or are blitzing heavy DPS ones.

You can also fit for max tank to blitz Damsel and Mordu's Folly 2 by ignoring the NPCs and only destroying the station.

The Hamgu gets great DPS but is very range limited. 700m/s isn't very fast in terms of damage projection. HAM missile velocity is around 5-6,000m/s and with a 2s launch rate you're most likely losing a lot of DPS either from getting into range or from miscounting volleys.

The Golem's cruise missiles are traveling ~10,000ms and with a cycle time of 8 seconds, they can travel ~60km without you having to worry about volley counting. With a 118km effective range, plus the MJD, the Golem doesn't need to move often, and when it does, the MJD lets it travel 100,000m in ~10 seconds, i.e. effectively 10,000m/s. Even if you account for the ~70s MJD cycle (activation time + recharge time), your Hamgu can only travel 700m/s * 70s = 49km in the same time.

The Hamgu's biggest advantage over the Golem is probably it's Gravitational Capacitor module which lets it warp significantly faster than a Golem which helps to reduce mission completion times, especially when blitzing. Of course this also means the Hamgu won't be moving at 700m/s anymore.

My HAMgu is a lot of fun, maybe when cruise missile V gets completed (about 4 days left I think) I may invest in a Golem...
