Something that has become a bit of a hobby of mine in recent years is researching the "forensic evidence" left behind by Awox'ers, Corp Thieves, Spias, etc. Lately, this hobby has become more of an obsession. Now, before you wrap me in a tinfoil straight jacket, let me explain where this started and then hopefully get some feedback from some of you, if you find this topic of interest.

I started doing this research as most do, as a proactive measure, though not full proof, could vet a few "Baddies" away at least. As time went on, and my knowledge base grew, I began trying to learn from other pilots mistakes instead of my own. I also became less interested in it as a proactive vetting tool for Corps, and more so in it as a puzzle. Usually finding intricate webs of Alts weaving in and out of different Corps, same grammatical errors on forum posts, a slip up on killboards where a repper was popped. Hell, even some (a lot more than I would have guessed) kept the same context in their name among a majority of their alts, and the list goes on.

This isn't to contend what I know and don't know. Psychotic Monk recently blogged about the Shadow Broker, who by all accounts could teach everyone a lesson in collecting intel. This is also not about outting anyone. I genuinely just get enjoyment out of putting it all together.

Does anyone else find enjoyment out of doing intel gathering, whether it be proactive or destructive? Close calls if you like to be the "Bad Guy"? Common mistakes the Criminal has made? The Corp? -Besides not doing intel at all!

Though, I will admit, its not that high octane thrill ride that one gets from Pvp. It may not even be fun, but its interesting.

Take you for example, not to go in detail, but a quick glance shows that you have multiple Alts. I would not say that much except that two even share your name. I find interest in the why and to what purpose is all.

I am also perplexed at how Corporations are so lax with vetting new recruits and collecting data prior to having pilots join. Especially for how common Awox'er, thieves, spys, etc reuse the same account numerous times. I think an educational piece should be in order for up and coming Criminals and CEO's alike. Most importantly on Alt OPSEC. As in, always keeping Alts completely seperate from your Main, if there is such a thing anymore. There was a time when CEO's thought having a full API meant they were safe. Unfortunate for them, there is no 100% safe from a true Master of the Dark Arts. Smile

Well, I'm in better health than Ex Cinere Scriptor, Scooter...

No matter! It does seem somewhat Incoherent now that I read it though, however, the spirit of what I was trying to convey is in that trainwreck somewhere. I will let this die now, since it does not seem to have any traction.

I apologize in advance for not being firm on letting this die. I did laugh, until what you said really sunk in. Straight

I have not had, nor will have my "shaft and testes" removed, nor do I have any desire to be an information dealer, or any of the sort. I was just curious if anyone finds the process of gather intel interesting. It would appear not, since it is being derailed, no help from myself included.

I will leave you all with this. You may call it tinfoil, but I do have definitive proof that the rabbit hole goes much deeper than it first appears with a few well known pilots out there, and no previous speculation that I could find on outside forums about that connection. Hidden in plain sight, and the act of covering the connection created a pattern that makes the case even stronger.

Next week I will tell you how I think crop circles are formed. Roll

Strangely enough I share your interest in secrets. I always loved knowing what is going on, even if I rarely have the occasion to use it. I have no interest in being a shadow broker either though.

And the point of a sandbox is playing it the way you want to. If that means you like tracking those patterns then do so!

Don't worry, the door doesn't open from the outside either.

After some mail correspondence with The Shadow Broker, it would seem that a majority of his business has been from Griefers, Spies, and Awox'ers, than that of CEO's. That being, to test his abilities, and to see how exposed their alts might be.

This revelation does not suprise me in the least though. CEO's and fledgling Corporations are too lazy, or don't see the value of protecting their pilots, thus deserve all consequences that go along with it.

As to the ones that seem to think this is a time consuming process, its not. Google, Dotlan, Eve-Who, Eve-Live, Forums. To the fledgling griefer, awox'er, and spies.. Don't cross contaminate your Alts, change your writing style in forums and in chat channels. Make all of them all seem to be polar opposites. Thats just a fraction of some of the security measures you can take to protect yourself. The accounts I use for shady operations that are compromised/contaminated have now moved on to other things or retired for the time being.

A lot of us don't make it much of a puzzle.

I know a character named "iPod Blues" that gets corp invites. I've seen corps surprised when "xxPopBlues420xx" ruined their mining op, and Minerbumping today is carrying a story of someone AWOXed by a character with a name like 'Neutralius Reppious'.

I wish I had more time to actively AWOX at the moment on characters with ridiculously obvious names. It's one of the most fun things to do in the game.

As for the OP, this is exactly the type of stuff I enjoy in eve. I'm acting as corporate security for my current corporation, though we do have an unsolved corporate theft. I need to get in touch with the shadow broker. I am extremely curious what connections there are between my characters, though anyone with my api should have no trouble figuring them out.

OP, I dont get all the hateful posts.

EvE is a sandbox, and if the emergent-gameplay detective is what you wish to do, I can definitely see the appeal for it. Those of you making insults and jests at the OP, please consider the fact that a corp spy or AWOXer can be more dangerous than a capitol fleet on your doorstep.

It amazes me at the sheer amount of actual tools that are used at verifying EvE players. Some real work went into coding some of this stuff. Id like to see more on the subject myself.

Even more interesting is putting your alts in your bio. That way your enemies might actually try to hurt you.

Though collecting intel may not be 'exciting' to some, your post reminded me of an old article about the Mittani, and how his spy network was instrumental in destroying his corp's adversaries. Knowledge is power. Don't let anyone dissuade you from your passion. Cool
