Only Customs frigates scan for contraband, you have to be decloaked within 10km of one.
Agility fit Blockade runner still might get the warning notify but you don't have to sit there and take anything, just split.
I learned all about this as a newb, wanted to go red from moving drugs n firearms, tiny fines, tiny sec loss that's only faction and eventual confiscation when i wasn't fast enough on a gate.
On the other hand, have used the customs mechanics to both set and evade traps, it's probably the most engaging thing in highsec.

Smuggling is very neglected though, almost like an afterthought. I wonder if people do it for ISK, or if there's profit in it.

One of the things we hoped for with WiS was the implication from one of the trailers about having to leave the pod to do "certain things" and so we imagined an underworld in the stations of sorts (I wanted to actually use those guns but that's the FPS in me).

As is just about every other dumb profession that the average person associates with any given space game. Every time some eager newbie talks about how he wants to be a "Bounty Hunter" I just laugh and pat him on the shoulder.

NPC's in this game are a ******* joke, smuggling stuff past NPC's is dumb as hell. Until they build a reason for players to do the job of both the smuggler and the hunter it's pointless to treat it as a profession that you would even care about.

That might be as simple as suspect flagging smugglers when contraband is detected in their hold.

But you know how it goes. Do that and everybody using illegal boosters in highsec from gankbear to mission bear will shriek, with one blaming the other for... everything. As usual.

(I'm referring to the non-synth boosters)

Yep, found some improved boosters in a can at a gate, aligned out, looted, got webbed into warp by cops (which was nice of them) allowing me to avoid the enormous fleet of Italian capsuleers who were warping in to destroy meh.
Of course the name of that corp won't be mentioned, in order to spare them the terrible effects of being terrible. You know who you are guys, strunzo de merda de la outta spacia.

If it's so easy then why was i scrambled inside the gate warp animation. Please don't tell me it was "for my protection", that's what the cops told me.

1. Put your contraband into a storage container.
2. Create a private courrier contract from where you are (A) to where you want to go (B) with that container and 1 unit of anything else as the cargo and yourself and the transporter.
3. Accept contract
4. Place shrink wrapped contract goods in your cargo bay.
5. Travel point A to B
6. Dock at B
7. Complete contract
8. Profit $$$

Apparently they can't scan inside shrink wrapped containers very well. Last time I did it, it worked great.

Last time I tried, contraband could not be put into courier contracts. Might work with a simple item exchange contract though.

I'd test it on SiSi first though.

There are quite often drugs for sale at low sec stations many of which are entry systems, I just meet my dealer there and don't run around near civilization with it.
