Cosmic Anomaly Escalation Question.

I just started playing Eve this week and I have been having a blast. I have been doing Cosmic anomalies as I find them and just had a question regarding them.

I learned that they have the ability to "Escalate" into expeditions. I know that there is supposed to be a "Trigger" that causes this.
I was looking up information regarding this and found that it was really old and seemed to be very conflicting. Some said that it was caused by killing the rats that are in the space and some said it could be also done by destroying the structures around the section. I was just wondering if that is still true or is it just based on killing the rats in the pocket? (Trying to save time and money if I don't have to destroy everything)

Any help is greatly appreciated!!

I ran anomalies and escalations from them in 0.0 for a bit, and while you're running them in highsec I suspect my answer might still apply - that answer being, it's random.

We would go straight for killing the things that would yield us payment for finishing that site - never popping unneccesary structures, just gunning for the rats. This tactic tended to earn us an escalation approximately 20-40% of the time, although some "escalation chains" seemed more predisposed to continuing to give us their later stages than others.

Usually it's entirely chance based and triggered is the destruction of the rats or in some site, the destruction of a special rat. That said if there is a unique structure in the site or the site description mentions a structure, it will be a likely trigger of some kind. There is actually a decent database of most common sites in highsec, so it's always worth it to just google the site name and see if someone has done the work for you.

That said highsec anomalies do escalate, but that is very, very rare. The 20%-40% figure doesn't apply to highsec. You're lucky if you get an escalation from 5% of the sites. They escalate to a low level complex. Basicly what I'm saying is, that doing anomalies in highsec only because of the escalations isn't likely going to be worth your time. The 20-40% escalation figure corresponds better to combat site escalation chains you get from cosmic signatures. They have unique escalation chains, where individual stages aren't worth much on their own, but they end in a final stage, that has a high chance of giving a good loot drop. Notice the use of the word chance here. They can give you a real jackpot, but more often than not you'll get meh stuff or just plain crap. Special case being drone sites which are crap 98% of the time in highsec including the escalations.

Even in low sec anomalies very rarely escalate....I'd say my actual percent is either around 1% or I have extremely bad luck. I'm talking variations of 4 dens, 2 ports and a 3 rally points back to back and nothing. I think in 2 years I've seen those escalate maybe 10 times total.

Hopefully they'll be changing this for the better with the new expansion.

The sites you use probes to find are much better.
