Are there any rules regarding naming a character? I'm trying to create some alts and I keep getting messages saying I can't use the name I typed in.

The character name can't be offensive or mimic an RL organization. For full rules you can read the EULA.

I'm guessing the problem you're facing is that the name has already been taken by someone else. You can change letters to numbers (like instead of Danica you can use Dan1ca) or something of the sort to try and make the name original.

If all else fails, you might have to come up with a new name altogether.

I think a green check mark will appear next to the name if it's not already in use and doesn't contain any unallowed special characters.

IIRC you are also limited to one space each in the family name and the given name. (So, a maximum of 4 words.)

If you're going to use them in fleet PVP, pick something like:
"Third Rifter", "Nearest Frigate", "Noone Is Primary" etc ;-)

I regret I created some alts before realizing this.

The issue did indeed appear to be the desired name was already in use. Rather than throw in a number for a letter (i.e. a "1" for an " I "), I just added a middle initial (i.e. Xxxxxxxx Y Zzzzz) and all is now well.
