Mining crystals damage

Damage of the mining crystal is not constant as far as I can tell. I can notice that T2 crystals tend to deteriorate faster than their T1 variants, which is ok. However, I have noticed that the damage done to the crystal is purely time based equation. Sometimes it looks like the damage is done faster/slower than usual.

So, my question is: Is there any known equation for this?

My guess is that the crystal gets damaged more quickly if your strip miner is working through an empty cycle (for example when there's 100 units of ore in the rock on the start of a cycle, your yield is 1000 units per cycle and you let the full cycle pass although the rock has been depleted near the start).
