I take it that makers have avoided an obvious alien rip-off then ?

I thought the bad acting was a bit distracting. The actors looking like they.. are acting.

I watched this several months back on netflix, it wasn't nearly as bad as I had expected, hell it was almost "good".

Now if you want a "laugh your ass off" bad movie, watch "Ghost Shark" it's a syfy original movie, I was laughing for an hour it was so bad.

I think that is why SciFi channel cancelled MST3K. It would only be a matter of time before the show would be lampooning SyFy's "original" movies.

The semi-documentary look of the film and the "acting" did lend to the film. Considering that such a voyage may be possible in this century lends it more credence to such encounters than any "Alien" film IMO.

MST3K was cancelled years before Sci Fi started making low budget schlock like "Volcano in New York", etc. Sci-Fi got tired of funding the rights to films to be riffed.

Also, why would Sci-Fi not want those bad movies riffed ? Movies are already paid for, so MST3K could have had them (on the same network) for free. Broadcast as 2 different shows, and a double-dip profit.

But, the made for Sci-Fi movies are already so deliberately bad by design, it spoils the spirit of the concept. They already riff themselves. It's funnier if the movie is earnestly struggling to be "good". This is why they did not do obvious Ed Wood films like "Plan 9" as it needs no help being made fun of. Instead they used his more rarely seen films like "The Violent Years".

MST3K:
Original channel KTMA (1988–89)
The Comedy Channel (1989–91)
Comedy Central (1991–96)
Sci Fi Channel (1997–99)

SciFi had the series for only 3 years compared to Comedy Central's 8 years. I doubt costs were an issue.

As for why would SciFi, then SyFy not want their own movies riffed? Becuase they actually beleive their movies are good? Otherwise SyFy would have to change their name again to SyComedy.

Wrong again.

As MST3K got more popular, movie companies started charging more for the broadcast rights as they figured out it was quite a lucrative way to finally profit from films that had failed.

Costs were indeed what killed MST3K. This is well known in the industry and amongst the fans. Sorry.

"Q: Why did Sci-Fi Channel officials decide to stop ordering episodes?
A: Initially, network executives said the issue was ratings, pure and simple. Later, they also noted that the cost of acquiring the rights to movies for riffing was getting too high. Many viewers also noticed a change in the network after Barry Schulman -- MST3K's chief defender at the channel -- departed, and Bonnie Hammer -- an executive from what was then Sci-Fi's parent company, USA Networks -- took over. MST3K apparently did not fit with her vision for the network."

Most indeed. Save the hate for Alien 3, Alien Resurrection, and AvP.

And Prometheus.

While I agree that we should save the hate for Alien 3, Alien Resurrection, AvP and Prometheus. I have to agree that Aliens was not a Alien movie, it is great action flick with Xenomorphs but the absolute absence of horror made it a pretty bad Alien movie.

Alien 3 did better in that regard.

Only thing I really don't like about Aliens is the Vietnam war references. Even the space marines looked like vietnam era soldiers.
