More people than you would think play EVE fulltime.

Like most online games the higher echelons will be full of people that are either off work for a range of reasons, permanently disabled (war vets, car accidents etc), actually make a living from the game (Mittani for example) or SHOULD be doing something else (like studying for their Law degree) but play EVE instead.

It is. Every single major sov-holding group is being held up by two forces - the spines of their logistics members, which hold it up 24/7, and the muscles of its military, which is only sometimes important but always a deterrent. I'm pretty confident making the claim that more EVE sov-holding entities have collapsed due to a failure of logistics than a failure of military strength. Once systems put in place by the alliance start breaking down is usually when alliances failcascade.

The space does not suck because of CVA's reputation at 'being terrible'. It is more likely that CVA 'is terrible' because their space sucks.

EDIT: Well that and the fact they are RP'ers and the lovable NRDS system most pvpers adore.

The NRDS system pretty much ensures they suck when they leave their space, as it fosters very bad habits in the more ruthless and prevalent "shoot it all, tell diplos about the blues" dynamic most of nullsec has.
