Dreadnought worth training for?

Up to now I've avoided cap ships because I know it requires to be part of a large alliance.

I'm thinking of training for a Dreadnought on one of my pilots. Mainly because I don't know what else to train on my Per/WP remap.

I like the Revelation because of lasers but am willing to look at other races. Other than POS bashing are they used much? I don't mind the time sink but my main concern is I don't want to train for a ship I'll never use. If it gets undocked every few months to kill something I'll be happy.

Any Dreadnought pilots willing to give advice on this?

Dreads are 99% of the time used for shooting structures.

Basically when you're in a K-space dread, it's virtually always an alliance level "mining op".

(In W-space it's a corp-level ratting op)

As Capital ships go, I have used a carrier like, a thousand times more than a dread.
It's a freighter
It's a Logi
It's a mobile fitting platform
It's a drone assist platform

If you haven't got a carrier, I'd say hands down, train that first.

As for dreads:
There's only one *bad* choice at this time. The Phoenix.

Thanks for the replies! Big smile

By "mining op" and "ratting op" I'm guessing you mean taking down someones POS? Twisted

The reason I was looking at a dreadnought is because the ship skill doesn't require capital navigation skills as a prereq. Right now I'm mapped Per/ WP.

I just looked at Evemon and I'm only losing about 3 days out of 31 on my Per/ WP vs Intel/ Mem map for the prereq navigation skills so this doesn't seem to be a factor like I thought. Either way I'm going to be training navigation skills off attribute because there's not enough to justify a remap to Inel/ Per.

I've had people tell me dreadnoughts weren't very useful but I like the idea of one ... Something about big guns blowing huge holes in things seems awesome! A carrier with it's fighter drones never seemed as cool to me. Of course I'd rather fly a not so cool carrier than ship spin a dreadnought. Maybe I'll train for one after I max my skills for a carrier.

You don't need to be part of a large alliance to use dreads. They're useful for pirates too.

They are a preq, just not listed. A dread without JDC is going to be a massive PITA to move.

You'll still need skills like tactical.. 5 which is quite a long per/will skill, but yeah carrier first is probably the logical choice unless your corp particularly needs dreads.

This is not a forum alt, this is a forum main.

Well I was just thinking large alliance because of needed backup to fly them. It seems cap ships are on everyone's "to kill" list lol

Of course I was going to train the navigation skills before I got one. I just didn't like having to do so on a Perception/ WP map. Looking further into it I see it doesn't make much of a difference over an Intel/ Mem map.

Dreads are nice and sometimes (altough rarely) even fun ...

BUT hands down go for a carrier first.
If you plan on living in null sec this ship makes your life so much easier.

Even if you don't ever plan on fighting in it.
You will need it's corp hangar and ship m. bay to jump your pvp stuff from one staging point to the next.
See it as a multi purpose mini jumpfreighter with the ability to defend itself (compared to an actual freighter^^)

Plus most of the capital skills you need for a carrier, you also need for a dread.
And yeah ... please don't ever get into a dread without jumpdrive cal 5 ... in a carrier you might get away with lvl4 but a dread needs it badly.

as everyone says carrier first.
you need the jump drive skills for both and the carrier is much more useful.
People use dreads mainly for structure killing but they are also used to kill other caps.
There are a few groups that like to kill jump frieghters /carriers with a small force of dreads via ambush then gtfo again.
If you can afford to lose dreads from time to time due to bad luck /traps then this is potentially a fun activity.

Dreads are also used to blap supcapitals in smaller scale engagements. Moros is especially adept at it.

All Dreads in my opinion have their advantages and disadvantages, except the Phoenix, don't get a Phoenix.

I'm going to train all the nav skills to 5 except JFC to 4. I figure it can save that for last once I'm in the ship. It looks like a carrier first then dreadnought. From what everyone is telling me the Archon is the way to go.

K-space dreads are massive battering rams used to get to the juicy center of a structure or super.

J-space dreads are tactical jackhammers.

I wouldn't want to be a k-space dread pilot. I'm neither thrilled nor put-out about being a j-space dread pilot. I spend a lot of time in other ships, and maybe three hours a week (when running escalations) in my Rev.

Can you hear them? They are calling to us. It is beautiful. http://thegreattichim.wordpress.com/

However, remember that if you're going to fly a Carrier, you need a cyno alt and that means second account. A Dread you could theoretically just keep at your alliance's hub and only take it out when there's structures to shoot.
