Mobile Tractor Hacking

I think it would add to the game-play of eve if with high skills, being able to hack into mobile tractor depots of players that have either gone offline or abandoned in space for a period of time. I know you can shoot them, but any of the mobile units should be able to be hacked if discarded. Either to gather the loot inside or to claim it for your own.

Could be fun.

I assume you'd be suspect the moment you start hacking right?

The hacking skill of the pilot who deployed it could be used to determine the strength of the MTUs defences.

I support this product and/or service.

Include secure containers and mobile depots as well. Could be quite fun.

This is a nice idea , but there needs to be some sort of trigger to determine when an MTU can be hacked, otherwise people will just roll around mission areas in silly-tanked BS's and steal them indiscriminately. I don't have much of a problem with that personally, I just don't want to hear the boo-hooing on the forums which would result in some weird nerf that changed other aspects of the game.

Some period of time since the tractor beams were last active, say 30 minutes? That gives the person who abandoned it time to go grab their own scanner ship and recover it if it was a mistake or if they were out in low/null and had to book it, while still being a reasonably short enough time that if the area is despawned and empty the person who found the MTU can just bookmark it and come back in a few minutes if the timer isn't up.

Some sort of flag would have to appear on the MTU to show it's been abandoned long enough to be hacked, maybe something that appears when you hit it with a cargo scanner?

Lots of potential here. I like this idea.

Edit: Not sure how I would feel about Mobile Depots personally, since they're intended to be left alone in space for long periods of time. MTU's are not. The attributes of the items themselves give a perspective of the disparity. MTU's decay after 48 hours, Mobile Depots last for 30 days.

Maybe if they've been shot down to reinforced mode and have come out of reinforced mode without being scooped up or repaired, you can then hack it to get both the contents and the Depot. Or....

Hack to force the Depot into reinforced mode.

Hack again at a higher difficulty to reduce/remove the reinforced timer,

Hack a third time at the highest difficulty after reinforced mode has dropped to steal the Mobile Depot.

Maybe.... Something can be done here, but the question is what should be done...

Wow, I am really glad that there is already some good feedback on the idea. I also like the other can and mobile depot ideas. Spit out any ideas you all have on the subject. Thank you all for your input.

In general I support this idea. But it should be enhanced to all deployables.

Please allow to reduce the container spam in highsec. :) Of course I could configure overview to not show them. But I'd like to get some of them in order to sell. It would be comparable to catch abandoned drones.

You should have at least following skills for hacking and pickup an MTU:
Anchoring I
Hacking IV

I also miss anchoring skill for using "anchored" deployables.

For unanchoring hacked containers you should have:
Anchoring I
Hacking V

In other cases you won't get the rightclick menu entry to hack that stuff.

Moreover I'd prefer to harden my stuff against hacking attacks with additional firewalls or virus "modules".
I don't know, whether content within secure containers is scannable.
If it is, alternative module might be available to avoid scanning. So you can harden it against scannong OR hacking.

EDIT: Well, maybe a time delay (depending on system security status?) really would be a good idea. MDs are not hackable as long they are hardened enough. You can add "plugins" for additional hacking avoidance.
T2-containers may be unhackable or unscannable.

Start hacking will set suspect flag. If you finished hacking, you are the owner of the unit.
