If it was free to convert your account to a Steam account, would you?

http://store.steampowered.com/stats/

The Steam version of EVE Online is currently on the list of their top 100 most played games. The list is updated daily and the peak amount of players for today is a little over 2000 players at once. If it was free to convert your EVE Online account to a Steam EVE Online account, EVE Online would skyrocket on this list, but only if everyone else was interested in playing EVE Online through Steam.

The main differences of using Steam instead of the standalone is:

  • the Steam browser becomes available (but is pretty useless since EVE Online already has a browser),
  • Steam has a count of the amount of hours you've played a game, which is always a fun statistic to have, IMO,
  • Steam will handle client updates in the background as long as it is active (as opposed to EVE's launcher only updating when you open it),
  • I imagine that players with multiple accounts will end up having to use the standalone client anyway, since I'm not sure how Steam handles multiple instances of the same application,
  • people who already use Steam for most of their gaming will be able to launch EVE the way they launch all of their other games, and
  • beginners will have easy access to the Community Hub, which is a fun way for players to share guides, images, videos, and fluff content like artwork and stories (basically pinterest-style reddit).

Personally, I like the idea of being able to contribute to the EVE Online player-count on Steam as well as being able to track my hours played. However, paying an extra $20 just to do it seems wasteful.

Thoughts?

Lookin' good, good-lookin'.

No.

Steam typically restricts you to launching only one game at a time.

Sometimes, I feel lazy and actually use the autopilot button (I know, I know...) while playing another game. Hard to do that if I can't launch another game while autopiloting.

Confirming: OP is not in the employ of Steam.

[insert random rubbish that irritates you personally] is further evidence that Eve is dying/thriving*

No.

Don't have the need. The game works fine for me as is, so I don't see value in throwing an unnecessary third party into the mix as well.

If I worked for Steam, I think I'd be in favor of them keeping the price so they make more money. I'd like to have the option to play through Steam without paying anything extra.

Lookin' good, good-lookin'.

Launching EVE through Steam starts up the EVE launcher, the game can be started multiple times from the launcher.

No. I already have eve installed now.. and I do not need the steam client installed and running on my machine all the time.

Hell no.

Not only do I:
a) want to run more than 1 client concurrently
b) Already have Eve downloaded
c) Don't want to have to pause my game in order to download more ****ing hats for that cartoony FPS that everyone except me seems to like
d) Don't want to have to deal with Steam bugs on top of possible game bugs
e) Don't want to have to deal with Eve support bouncing me to Steam support, who bounce me back to Eve support due to said bugs (This happened with a previous MMO I used to suffer on)
f) I'd rather have my PC's resources going to the game that I'm playing instead of a 3rd party system who offers me... nothing except frustration running in the background (oh, look, more ****ing hats to download, I'll just interrupt this quick bit of fighting that you're madly involved with)

Steam: Just say No.

no because steam is horrible. you cannot use a steam game without being able to access steam and its prone to break for no reason what so ever in such a way that not even steam knows "there was an error".

I bought a steam game years ago, i barely got 6 months combined usage of it, due to steam constantly breaking. Having to boot into safe mode every day for a minipatch was terrible as is. Often for the most stupid reasons "meatball game isnt working for a couple players so heres a patch for the planet"

Its now at the point where i just cannot log in. it returns a blank error which has no result from google searching. I really couldnt be bothered jumping through 30 billion hoops knowing that, if i do find a fix, it will just break again a few months later. I essentially feel scammed by steam. Not that im going to try and return my game or nothing, it just wont get used.

Uninstall Steam off your computer and download the standalone EVE.

Eves steam integration causes problems all the time, and my recommendation upon finding that someone is using the steam version is to have them contact the GM's and get the account converted ASAP.

It generally doesn't get in the way of gameplay, but the instant you try and do anything account related, boy are you in for a wild ride!

Absolutely not, and this is coming from a heavy Steam user.

No, Steam sucks. Their no refunds policy means I'm better off buying games at my local JB Hi Fi where 'no refunds' policies are illegal by Australian law. Which is why I was one of the lucky few to get a hassle free refund for X-Rebirth. The only reason EVE is even on Steam is because a lot of people use Steam, and it's a good way for CCP to raise awareness of the game's existence without exorbitant advertising.

No, the steam UI causes more problems than it's worth, and Eve is not a game that would work well with Steam as most people have more than one character active at a time and I even have multiple installations to keep different setting profiles separate from one another.

If there was a way to tell steam that I'm playing EVE with steam having no communication or contact with the client (Kind of like the Xfire of old but without the process hooking) I would for the potential for new players as a result of it being top listed but other than that? No.

I used to use the Steam client and I didn't have to convert it to a Steam account but because I'm running on a Mac I now use Eve through Wine and am enjoying it much much more than the Steam or native client.
