The new dscan rocks!

The introduction of a distance slider means I no longer have to do my old RSI-inducing finger dance.

Scan, knock off the 2, it's still there, knock off the 1, it's still there, knock off the 4, it's definitely coming my way.
No wait it's gone, re-enter 214, if there reduce again accordingly, by 2, by 1, by 4, ad infinitum.

My number pad could barely take anymore, and we both thank you! The addition of the circular angle display is a nice touch too.

Though, I notice you stole 8 million km from us... I might need to update a few of my "just off dscan" bookmarks darn you!

It's worth it though! Big smile

Indeed, not only fewer keyboard presses but also faster to use!

Finding out if that war target is in the mission 10 au away instead of the pos between us inline with my scan? Pow! Easy as cake!*

Just enter 10.1 au in the scan box, if he's there move the mouse up again over the AU box and roll the middle wheel down, then reclick, if hes not then hes pos'd up. Super fast if you get the "roll, click, hover, roll" thing intuitively.

I totally agree.

Once more, one of the "little things" is my Eve-Patch-favorit. Well done, keep up the good work!

You seem to be mixing up "easy as pie" with "piece of cake."

Could have been worse though... cake's your uncle!

The new d-scan is very nice!
I think the scan button is a little bit far to the right. It would be better if it was at the begining of the tab.

OP, I don't know what you just said, but I hope to learn more about Dscan so that I do..

It's good to hear the change in 1.3 seems to make the feature better.

There are much better guides to describe it than I could manage but I will try to boil it down.

If you are hunting you spend most of your time when d-scanning modifying the angle of the scan, so that you can pinpoint your enemies location accurately. Most of the time there is only one thing or cluster of things in that direction so range is rarely a big factor.

When you are defensively d-scanning you spend most of your time modifying the range, so that you know whether a ship is just passing through, or is in your area, or possibly even on your mission gate etc. In this situation it doesn't matter which direction the ship is coming from, you merely need to know it is certainly coming for you. So you have a full 360 degree scan at all times but regularly modify the scan range.

The changes have made it incredibly easy to modify range, as well as added AU as an option so we no longer have to look at AU to km conversion charts when trying to accurately pinpoint something and rapidly enter 6-10 digit numbers to modify the range. All around it has made both offensive and defensive scanning faster, and easier.

Be glad you were not tortured by it before, and I hope your learning goes well. Next to local chat, d-scan is this games most powerful tool... in my humble opinion of course!

[Devil's advocate]

These small things changes, while appearing to make things easier, actually do nothing but further dumb down the game.

The unique marketing proposition of EvE is that it provides a sandbox that challenges players in an environment where survival of the fittest rules.

These changes break the game and make it a themepark where people don't have to think as hard about the consequences of what they do and therefore aren't challenged as much as in the past.

Many players complain that the non-consensual pvp and wardecs will break the game, but I would argue that turning the game into a themepark will be the gamebreaker as the unique marketing proposition will be gone.

If EvE becomes the same as every other game, then there will be nothing to distinguish it from any other game and it will just be WoW with different graphics.

As a result, those players that want freedom, a challenge and puzzles to work through won't have them and the game will be competing for players who could play any of a number of other games that provide the same content.

[/Devils Advocate]

I don't currently think we are there with the above and I think what the small things team are doing is great. But at some point, the game may be walking that fine line. I would prefer CCP remove themselves from the game as much as possible and just provide the environment with all rules and norms determined by the players.

PS. Above I agreed that these changes are awesome and I still agree with that. This is just a discussion point hopefully, but I'm happy to be flamed.

I think the complexity and challenge shouldn't be using the tools to accomplish something, but to use the tools correctly to accomplish something.

It's wrong to give a sculptor a spoon and tell her "since it's harder to work now, it's more meaningful" .. give her proper tools so she can focus on the sculpting.

Having better tools in EVE does not remove choices and complexity from the game, imo.
