Carrier Question

is it worth getting and flying a carrier? Do they really serve any purpose or is it all about the super caps now? The reason I ask is out of curiosity, when I first started playing Dreads were amazing to me and so I trained up so I could fly one not having any reason too. So I could fly a carrier fairly quick I'm just curious if there would be any advantage or use. Are they used out in 0.0 or low sec as security or fleet battles or have they been made obsolete.

Whether or not it is worth purchasing and using a carrier depends entirely on your personal circumstances. They are great for parking in a POS shield and assigning fighters to friends who are ratting; they are great for serving as personal logistics vehicles in nullsec and as evacuation vehicles in the event that you need to move on to a new home; they are also unparalleled in providing repair services to damaged structures, and they have very long-range jump drives. Whether these positives make the ship class worthwhile to you is a matter for you to determine for yourself. If you cannot think of a way to use it to benefit you, then I would not suggest you get it; but, that is true of pretty much anything, despite the fact that we live in a consumption-based society where it's presumed everyone wants at least one of everything.

Pretty much that. They are extraordinarily useful to some but useless to others. I use them for moving around and running missions. The mobility they give you is really amazing. I can move clear across new eden without too much hassle. Just have to move a quick and nimble cyno frig. It certainly beats the hell out of running 40 jumps 1 way multiple times in BS's, BC's and cruisers.

I used to use them in pvp (20-40 man fleets, triage fit) but SC's have made fielding anything that isn't nano or an SC basically suicide in such gangs, so I don't do that now. That said, it's my understanding that they are still very popular in null sec fleets since they don't have to triage to be effective in large carrier/SC fleets.

But as said, if you can't think of a need then you don't need one. Simple as that. All you need to know to make that decision is to know what they are capable of. I don't see a reason to describe that here as simply reading the ship details in game and a look at EFT should tell you everything you need to know. You should also google eve jump planner to get an idea of just how quickly you can skip across new eden in one.

Carriers really are one of the best ships in the game.

the ONLY thing wrong with them is that they are unable to go through acceleration gates and stargates :(

That small misfortune aside, they make great PVP and PVE ships

If you live in Null sec then odds are you will move regions from time to time, be it alliance changes or going on deployment. One carrier can move a lot of fun ships in one journey and have a decent storage space for all the ammo and fuel you should need.

Likewise it is a hell of a lot less fun to rep in any ship other than a carrier, coz POS repping sucks to start with.

Finally, barring the Supercarrier, they are the best alt you can have for killing them up in Havens/Sanctums etc.

Alright thanks guys, you definatly answered my question. At this time I really can't think of any use I would have for it other than it would be a cool new expensive toy. I guess I will be holding off until I can come up with a use for it.

As for moving ships, I would really like if carriers get a little gimp in their ship hangar arrays like:

Carrier ship maintence hangar change from 1mio m³ to 3mio m³
Supercarrier gets 6mio m³ instead of 2mio
Titan gets 10mio ?

A carrier should carry not only drones Big smile

Eve Minions is recruiting.

This is the law of ship progression!
