How long before I can be somewhat effective?

Hi C&P!

I'm a returning player with a new toon (about 2 days old atm) and I was wondering how long do you think before I can effectively kill, anything, as my skill need building up etc.

I'm looking to pick Gallente as my preferred race as they seem to be well rounded in capability for various roles later on etc.

What would you recommend for my first/second ship to train so I can kill something piloted by another player? Atron? Incursus? Probably not Tristan I would think as the drone skills would take a while to get decent I guess. And what fits would you recommend?

Cheers o7

You can be effective in about six to ten hours after character creation.

The Catalyst excels at blowing up low EHP targets very fast but is pretty weak against anything cruiser size.

The Vexor is the best ship under 50m ISK in the game but requires a lot of skillpoints to fly effectively at all.

You can be effective now, you just need friendship and teamwork. Find a few other new people flying Catalysts and go ruin someone's day.

With the Cats are you talking about suicide ganking or doing wardec stuff?

So basic fit would be meta 3 guns, scram, sebo,DCU & mag stabs?

The absolute most damage a new character can do is by getting into a corporation, stealing anything they can (usually not much but even something like a million units of Antimatter M or a quarter million units of Mexallon might be worth a bit to you), then lining up an out-of-corp friend to provide remote repairs while you hunt down and kill your corpmates in legal highsec combat.

You can do that in a Catalyst with meta 3-4 guns, one scram, one long point or afterburner, a DCU and two magstabs. Your friend should be in a meta 4 fitted T1 Exequeror.

Bonus points if you hold a killright on your friend and manage to sell it for 500m ISK or more. (Yes, I've seen people pay that).

The Catalyst works well for suicide ganking. If you fit it with some tank you can use it to roam in nullsec or lo sec and find some people to shoot at. Honestly, if you get 3-4 people in decent catalysts you can do lots of cool stuff.

Train the toon you have and be proud.

Also, as far as ships go...all the frigates are deadly, if the player knows what he is about.

Skill points and nice gear help, but you, yourself, right now, can pop some idiot in a Dramiel who has max combat skills.

But as for ships you should fly while you are low-skill.......

Battle Venture.

Its cheap.

Its fast.

Its weapons-neutral (can't use launchers tho...oh god do I wish I could make a rocket Venture.....).

And its fun...:)

Especially when you kill some idiot flying a Dramiel with it..:)

Everything in EVE is a trap.

And if it isn't, it's your job to make it a trap...:)

Train a lit'bit of caldari battleship, go jita, buy CNR, buy nice officer modules, fit ship to your best knowledge, undock and shoot yellow player conveniently positioned next to your high damage ship. New pilots try it all the time so it must be effective.

Train into an ECM ship. (Not the EAF, just a griffen, to start with)

The support skills are relatively fast to train up, and any fleet will be happy to have you along.

ECM is also FANTASTIC at producing tears. Just think, you could soon be seeing lines like:

"Sorry you needed to use ECM to win.."

"F*CKIN ECM garbage!"

" I would have won if it wasnt for your stupid ECM ship!!11!!1"

These, and more, could be yours!

Well you're posting in crime and punishment so i assume you want to be a menace. If you truly don't care about your sec status and you've got the money to do it, you can always go fit up an El cheapo alpha thrasher and go pod popping around mining systems. You'd be surprised how many idiots unlock in their billion isk pods bare and exposed to go to a trade hub to buy new ships. They don't even bother with completely free rookie ships. It's a wonderful kind of stupid. So if you're looking to ruin someone's day and laugh your ass off, that's always fun. On average I'd estimate the average pod values are from 50 mil up to 200 mil. Every now and then there's a juicy billion isk pod. I've got one worth almost 2 bit on one of my alts. I laughed all the way to the bank and I'm still laughing.

if you can hold point and survive long enough for your gang to arrive on grid, you are useful

to be all purpose good will take a couple years
to be effective, 1 month to never, it depends on you
