What if......

The B-R fight was orchestrated by CCP, paying off some of the leadership of PL and Goons to ensure an epic battle, without over-stressing the node.

I mean, according to some reports, they spend 6 million a year on advertising, I've never seen it. Where do they advertise?

Considering the fight seems to have generated quite a bit of free advertising and drawn a fairly large spike in numbers, I guess spending a few hundred K among some key people would probably be a worthwhile investment. With the constant NDA drive that everyone seems to be on, it certainly wouldn't be hard to keep it quiet. And many EvE players aren't rich in real life, it certainly would be cheap enough to buy a few.

But if it were true, and you found that CCP was ok with spreading money behind the scenes to generate a buzz., how would you feel about it?

Let the flaming begin....before the Lock...Cool

The B-R fight?

That's like 3 weeks ago or something. So old my fading memory hardly recalls it anymore.

A little bit late for this conspiracy.

However, to answer your hypothetical: how would I feel about CCP spreading some greenback love to generate content - more power to them. Their game and they can do what they want as long as I can enjoy my gametime.

That sounds quite plausible, actually.

My bar pays 60k a year for a 1/8 page ad in each of the two local weeklies. That's 120k for just one thing hardly anyone sees. Advertising is not cheap.

Six million a year worldwide is nothing for a game company. Barely a blip in your peripheral vision.

I doubt it tbh.

IMHO it would represent a very poor return for the investment. A quick look at the new player count shows the B-R effect tailed off rather dramatically. I suspect a lot of those new players will likely dissappear once they discover the reality of TiDi soaked large battles in null .... assuming there will be such events in 'bluesec' null ever again, of course.

Could it have happened? Sure. But with EVE just about everything comes to light eventually. T20 anyone? So not likely. I don't think CCP would need that kind of advertising. If they wanted to all they'd have to do to generate a lot of press is open Jove space. Just the word of mouth buzz would generate a lot of press on that one. Interesting conspiracy theory, but with the CCP internal affairs team in place I find it highly unlikely!

QFT.
And that is Print. I've been in the advertising business for 16 years. Your 120k schedule is crazy money for a bar (in print) unless you're getting co-op from your alcohol vendors. I know AE's that would do dirty stuff for that. :)

Because that's what all noobs do right off the bat. Go to null.

I just undocked for the first time and someone challenged me to a duel. Wat do?

I have a theory that Dinsdale is actually an alt of the Mittani. I have no proof of this, nor I have done any other research beyond occasionally seeing Dinsdale's posts.

Take into consideration the BR fight also happened like, what was it? 1 year to the day after whatever that other major attention drawing fight happened to be?

I was kicking around some thoughts on the high likely hood that the entire ordeal was an orchestration on the highest level. Naturally, those who wish to only accept things at their immediate face value, disregard the possibilities to prevent them from having to admit to their inadequacies, not being as important as they feel they are.

It's nice to see someone else came to this same conclusion, albeit a couple of weeks later.

They definitely should pay employees to play as regular folks and create content for the masses, but this.... nah.

Lets say I start an advertising company, I offer to advertise the game for 3 million dollars, ccp sends the money to my company. I go on the forum and post about how great EvE is, I keep the 3 million, my cousin who works at CCP gets a nice check as a "gift". I could see something like that going down if you wanted to get tinfoil about it, but Pay per Click advertising isn't cheap, its sometimes almost a dollar per click to get onto the front page of major websites.
