The Universe has to be maintained - and here with some news on how that maintenance is going is CCP Nobody! He has written a devblog which introduces the Universe Data Migration, which has been in testing on SiSi now for some time. What does this mean for you?

Find out here!

Nice, thanks for the update.

One question: The devblog said that x, y, z coordinates for solar systems may have changed. Do you or CCP Nobody have any ideas as to the scale of the changes (e.g.: are they off by meters, or kilometers, or AU, or even LY?) This might have an ancillary effect on capital jump geography, if the values in the new data export are also reflecting a change in the game data itself, and I'm just wondering if we should be rethinking how we move capital ships in-game because of these changes.

They should only be off by a meter or two.

/me buries his head in his hands. More stuff to convert.

Wonder if anyone would notice if I just sneak in the old tables Blink

Edit:

On reading:
\o/

All looks good to me. I'll probably do conversions to mysql and postgres for it, and possibly a combined sqlite DB.

I'll get onto that conversion later today, when I'm at home.

Somone mind giving a layman's version of what just happened? I mean that's great and all but most of that went over my head and lit it on fire (see avatar).

They're moving where they're storing things like where planets and asteroids are.

This is so they can make changes more easily. Thankfully, they're giving us the compiled version, rather than the version that is in the build system (which is likely yaml, and a pain to deal with)

Being sqlite means it's easier to play with for most people, as they don't need to have MS SQL server.

Can you guys move everything into source control? I would love to just get a sqlite database generated as an artifact from your build system. I seem to remember you promising to do this last Fanfest.

So when can we expect stars, moons, planets and other celestials to start orbiting each other?

I don't judge people by their race, religion, color, size, age, gender, or ethnicity. I judge them by their grammar, spelling, syntax, punctuation, clarity of expression, and logical consistency.

Except for finding a sqlite program as nice as Microsoft's freebie SQL Server Management Studio (suggestions please!) and pointing at the new file, does anything else need to change in how the queries that create EVEMap's data files work (yes, I'm still plinking at it as my 7-month old allows, but hey, it's working!)? At the moment, I use the raw MS-SQL database backup, pull it into SMS, run my SELECT scripts and export the results to a CSV file. If I'm reading this right, all but one of the tables involved (dbo.chrFactions) are being moved out of the static dump and into a new sqlite db, but apart from a meter here or there, none of the columns/data (apart from landmarks, which I don't use) is changing.

I've heard that http://sourceforge.net/projects/sqlitebrowser/ isn't bad.

For the export, there's always the list command, on the command line tool.

I've never used it, but http://sqlitestudio.pl/ may suit you.

So, the questions: is this the change needed to allow for creation of structures to not be tied to downtime, a la player-created stations? And would this change now allow players-- with new game mechanics, of course --to destroy stations and stargates? Or would this allow, say, wormhole signatures to retain their IDs across downtime?

Basically: obviously this has a lot of utility. Is this being deployed primarily for Team Gridlock purposes, or is its primary aim backbone for the summer expansion?

Since CCP has talked about a content arc over the next few expansions that involves building stargates and new space, this might be foundation for developing that feature? I don't know computer :(
