You CAN play EVE as a PvE game. You can keep doing that until you no longer want to play in fact.

However; other people can still choose not to play EVE as PvE, even if it involves you in PvE mode. How has already been quite properly explained I think.

The real downside of PvE too long is mental laziness. You dont need to keep a very close watch on local in h-sec. You don't need to hit d-scan regularly and making bookmarks all over the place isnt really needed either.
So the longer you stay in H-sec, the bigger the change will be when you move to an area that is designed for PvP (low, null, WH), you'll be utterly unprepared.

I would be so bold to say that experience as a PvP-er will help you with most things in EVE, including PvE.

This is so true. I PVE to rebuild sec status every now and again, and my PVP experience means I know to do things like overheat Omnidirectional Tracking Links (the drone precision module) to pop warp scrambling frigates with my sentries at extreme range, before they have much transversal. It also means I see frigates that are using MWDs and know to shoot them while their sigrad is at a x6 penalty. It means that I know the capabilities of many of the ships that might pop into 'my' mission and can make an informed judgement as to whether to engage (my Ishtar will not initiate combat with a Marauder or an Interceptor or ships known to aggressively neut, but will take on most other ships even in a 1v2 situation).

Ok so a recap for when I was sleeping P

1. If I find myself in my POD run like hell to somewhere safe, before trying to convers with my attackers.

2. If I only PVE even a little bit I am PVPing other players since I am looting and selling items (every little ripple counts)

3. By learning PVP even in the slightest capacity will help me more in PVE then the other way around.

4. Don't brag in public channels on the phat lootz you may have on your ship.Blink

5. Don't fly what you can't lose

Thank you all, all great information, I will have to rethink some of my game plan. But I am safe to say that since I am still a noob and still slowing working thru tutorial missions I am going to finish up them and try to find the UNI and work on some more before I take a trip out into the lowersec area's. right now I'm getting the hang of flying my ship to and from places but still uncertain on a few aspects of fighting.... even though it's only NPCs which seem pretty easy so far. I still have to learn how to use Drones I have done some missions where I used them but still don't know how to control them with any certainty or how to get them back into my ship (Lost the Civilian Drones) I looked at all the buttons but never saw a return to bay button and thought they worked the same as the scanning ones that will auto come back to your bay when you warp (or at least I think that is what the tutorial told me when I was scanning for the Exploration mission) but with the scanners there was a return to bay button.

Good morning !
i think you get it ! =)

for the Drones : if you see a folder on your right side window.. next or near your overview.. one will say drones in Space .
right clicking this opens commands for how to recall.. drones.. whig is either return & orbit. or to fully return them.. return to droe bay.

press the ESC button on your keyboard. go to SHORTCUTS tab.

there you will see shortcuts for all/most commands and there is one SPECIFICALLY for drone commands.
i would suggest learning to memorize your most used commands. as it will make your reaction time quicker in combat.. for PvE AND PvP..
** SPOILER ALERT below ( details of tutorials ) **

After the tutorials are done.. you should have nearly 10 ships ?
the industrial ship you get is your racial industrial ship it can carry quite a large hold of cargo especially with cargo hold expander modules you'll get from tutorials. be careful when flying these.. but no one will really want your ship unless it has more than 100million ISk in goods.. any lower than that its not worth the risk/reward to gank you. ( not 100 % guaranteed still better odds tho if you keep the hauls cheap. )

At the end of the advanced military tutorial you'll also be given a Destroyer... this is the first ship you'l get that will be bigger than a frigate and can easily do all level 1 missions.. and with better skills.. even level 2.

After the tutorials .. you may chose to do the sister's of eve Epic Arc mission ( titled : ( Blood Stained Stars ) .. which will give you a guided tour of all 4 empires in New Eden. ( it will not take you into low sec or null sec space as long as your safety is on for flying ) this is a roughly 50 mission story arc.. with loot & rewards that equal somewhere close to 35 million ISK.. more if you also learn Salvaging skill.

if you ever want to practice a few basics or just a sparring partner.. or a chat in game. hit me up if you see me .. add me to watch list as a contact.
I will even provide you ( anyone really this is an open invite ) with a few basic T1 frigates with fits you can save for later.. it's not worth my time to scam anyone as we're both new. and i genuinely only want more opportunities to PvP .. with ANYONE ! o7

Note : EvE being a sandbox, you are never required to even do any of the tutorials or this epic arc.. but its a great source of income for a new pilot. and will show you the world of EvE.. at least an introduction.

Thanks that is good to know I wasn't to worried since they were civilian drones but once I start using other drones I want to make sure I get them back before I warp off lol. I was planning on doing the Epic Arc mission once I get done with the rest of my tutorials on CAS, I wasn't thinking of the loot but I knew it would give me a better understanding on a lot of the aspects in EVE travel fighting and whatnot. And so far everything I have done I have been in the first Ship the game gave me ... besides the very few missions where I had to use another one. And yes I will add you to my contacts list once I'm in game (if I can figure out how to which I'm sure isn't to hard lol).

I'm only weeks old in Eve and contrary to Arc'Los, I've only ever pve'd.

I joined Eve Uni after finishing the tutorials and I've developed a plan for how I wish to proceed. Ultimately, I'd like to progress into pvp, but I'm happy to stay in pve until my skills are at a level where I could feel comfortable to fly in a pvp fleet.

As most people of written, having a goal provides you with direction in a very vast sandbox. This can be the hardest thing you'll decide to do, but try to start out with a small goal. By way of example, my first goal was to have enough core and specialised skills to level IV to operate a tackler frigate. I pve (little trading, mining and mission running ) until the skills are leveled.

Eve Uni is a good place to start as well as they have a number of tutorials about different elements of the game. I'm sure other corps offer similar things, but my experience to date is limited to E-Uni.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

If you can fly a frigate, and can equip a warp disruptor or scram, you are already useful in a fleet.

Don't fall for the common trap a lot of people fall for.

If you go the way of "I need 'x" amount of SP or ISK" or "I need to fly ship 'x" before I can PvP", you will never ready as you will keep extending your goal.

Also, it will do just 1 thing, make more expensive losses.

Start ASAP.

All you need:

A frigate
A gun
A warp disruptor
A little bit of tank

And then you CAN PvP, be it very very basically.

What can I suggest to you:

1. Join an Agony Unleashed BASIC class when they have one that suits your timezone (they tend to cycle them through US / AUS / EU timezones). This is all based on T1 frigates, so the ship you will use will cost about 3 - 8 mil (depending which ship and where you buy them). As you likley need 2 or 3...this comes to a total value of 30mil as a maximum.

This class will learn you the basic of PvP and E-war. How to move, how to find and kill targets etc. This also can be turned around in your case as you now know how a PvP does those things and how to evade them.

2. Join public roams like RvB Ganked or Sunday Sinners. Though not really a teaching enviroment, they can make you learn by doing. Out of the 2 listed, I would go personally for Sunday Sinners, not just because I like SS more then Ganked but more so because it's a bit smaller and thus easier to ask questions and learn in a little more relaxed way.

if you decide to participate it any of the suggested activities above.. even just once... you'l at least have the knowledge to know the basics .
it will also relieve you of the surprise of that first encounter which is both frightening and exhilarating at the same time.
you'll realize the ship is just a tool.. just a hull.
and you can always at the very least fly a rookie ship which is free and mine.. or mission until you recoup.

i think i heard people here on forums say there is even an angel program for pilots in need.

You mentioned heading to lower security areas is in your future.

Just be aware that not all of lowsec is equally dangerous and getting in is often the most dangerous part.

You have access to a lot of information on your starmap (press F10 to view it, preferably when you are docked up, and if you see a map of only your solar system change it to the star map on the menu that appears). You can highlight systems by "How many player ships have been destroyed in the last hour".

I do not enter a system in lowsec where that number is 5 or higher without taking extreme precautions.

If you do that, lowsec will be safer than you think. (Not totally safe, however).

Just popping in to comment on this...

You dont have to say anything to anyone, if you have nice things on your ship people will know, because there is a module which allows other people to scan the contents of your ship, and it can be done without you ever knowing, and can be done so fast that they will know what you have before you warp away from station. The best way to avoid getting ganked because you have expensive things on your ship, is to not use those expensive things. 9 times out of 10 those expensive things are only giving you a minor increase in effectiveness, and make you more of a target than it is worth.

So far no-one has touched on the subject of the OP regarding himself bad at PVP. I'd like to point out the ISK issue will diminish over the next few months if you decide to keep playing. Believe me, after a while you will think nothing of losing a frigate, because you have the ISK to buy 100 of them. Once you feel financial restrictions relax, do try PVP. I thought I would be bad at it too as I suck in other games. Turns out I'm not as bad as I expected, and really enjoy shooting at less predictable, human opponents.

There are lots of other things to do in Eve other than pvp, but remember that this is mostly a pvp based sandbox game, so youll be missing a significant part of the game by completly avoiding it. Just remember its impossible to avoid others from attacling you completly so always keep this in mind when using a blingy ship or cargo, even in hisec.

Update: I'm still here and having a good time. Found a good Corp. Which yelled at me when I was moving all my stuff from CAS to new location, not when I was moving it all through Highsec but when I got sick of all the jumps and turned off the safe mod to save a few jumps by traveling through lowsec lol. And this is where I found out I do not have a clue what I am doing.

paraphrasing:
Fleet: "who the hell is flying (industial ship) though X ?!"
me: "me just moving my stuff to station.
Fleet: "you know you have four ships following you and going to kill you!? you dumbass!"
me: "what?, oh that must have been some of that group of 20 red things I saw on overview a few jumps ago"
Fleet: "Don't ever fly (industial Ship) in lowsec EVER !"

So I felt silly but I had no idea I was being followed I had heard about Dscan but had no idea how to use it, and luckly I didn't lose my ship since the group that was following me ran into some trouble along the way "Fleet" (thank you guys). But once I got situated and started asking question and even flew out in a roam with my rookie ship just to see how things worked and had a good time. I did get caught in a bubble (because I messed up) and lost my ship but got way in my cap was still a great time. But with some great help from the corp I have the basic's on what a Dscan is and how to use it which is priceless information.

I must say PVP in EVE is way different then I thought it was going to be from my past experiences in other games. So I think I'm going to like PVP. I still want to PVE, and I still do while skills train, and I'm still uncertain what I plan to do in the long run with my career for my pilot in EVE but I am having a good time and good people to play with.

So thank you all to help me keep an open mind on PVP in EVE.
