Hai!

So...I'm a new player. Less than a week. (Can't believe I didn't get into this a long time ago... Shocked )

I thought I'd share a couple of thoughts on the bantering about the game's "accessibility" ... from a new player perspective.

Disclaimers first, disclosure of bias Big smile --->

1. Only thing close to the experience I'm having getting into this game was when I discovered Morrowind years ago. The scope of that game blew me away and EVE is simply 10x greater than that experience. So... best game evah type feelings going on here.

2. I'm a complexity junkie and I don't mind grinding, which likely explains why I'm loving this experience.

Now... onto my thoughts --->

1. Language. I'm not sure what "accessibility" or "before you can do anything" really means. Probably means different things to different people. But, in general, I don't think I've experienced either. I mean, ya, I get it. It'll be a long time before I'm a veteran pilot who can hold his own in low or null sec. But to say that the game isn't "accessible" or there's "nothing to do" until then is a lot of bull. So, I think part of the issue with all the noise about it is just the poor use of overly generalized terms.

2. With that said, there's plenty for a noob like me to do. I'm enjoying the hell out of messing with my first destroyer fit, taking detailed notes and mapping out a path toward my first cruiser. Making my first mining ventures more efficient. Laying the foundation for what I hope in the future becomes a very effective Mining Corporation. There's so much to do... and so much to look forward too. And that's the rub... the complexity and the grind provide so much anticipation... and it doesn't appear that that's going away anytime soon.

3. The tutorial is very well done. From what I'm gathering, it's been developing over the years. But investing the time in doing the tutorial and the Sisters of EVE epic is proving to set me up quite nicely with a wide range of the basics. And there's so much still to do... did I mention that? But the point here is that I found the tutorial to be incredibly useful for introducing me to the core game concepts... so... erm... I don't feel at all like I've been left without any direction (aside from a few minor things.. but I'm learning that learning is very much a part of the EVE experience... another thing I really enjoy.)

4. Last... I guess many peeps that complain are just looking to jump into big rigs and fly around shoosting up peeps. And while I'm sure that's going to be fun... there's just so much more to this game. It really is damn close to a complete package... diplomacy, trade, business, warfare, empire building.... all marvelously created and driven by social skills and social interaction. It's the complexity and patience required that create the tension and the staying power. IMHO.

So... perhaps that's not your typical sensation junkie gamer cup o' tea. But the robustness of the community and the mind boggling depth of this gem depend on the grind, and the complexity, and the depth. I hope CCP never ever change that.

Now back to mining!!!Smile

Welcome to EVE!

Only thing I would tell you - you are going to hear a bunch of high sec carebears tell you that you "can't" go into low or null sec until you have specific skills or a specific ship. Ignore them. These are the people who have been hugging high-sec all their lives and are always "almost" ready once they get that "one more skill" or that "one more ship" - then after they get it, there will be just "one more thing" they need to get - repeat until death due to boredom.

I've personally witnessed accounts less then eight hours old flying with and taking part in some epic fun pew pew space battles against other players.

So again, welcome - and my best piece of advice - don't believe anyone when they tell you how to play EVE. Most of them are too cookie cutter to try anything new or original, or have been simply fed the same line by someone else and will pass it on to the next generation of newbie. Hell, I know players who in their entire eve career have never even come up with a original fitting for a ship - they just ask others what the "Best" fitting is, and use that every single time they fly that kind of ship. Then they will cry when they are countered easy by other cookie cutter fits designed to counter the original cookie cutter fit. Think outside the box, man!

Excellent post Ralen. Please bookmark this post of yours for later. The first time you get frustrated, or feel like you were squashed unfairly and the first time you get suicide ganked please return to this post and read it.

You will get ganked while mining.
You will get utterly destroyed before you can react at some point while in a combat ship.
You will die in a fireball while stuck on a space rock to some laughable easy NPC rats.
You may even get scammed.

When it happens, roll with it. Do not get discouraged, just get even.

Crime, it is not a "career", it is a lifestyle.

You will also probably also lose a ship eventually to a disconnect and unless the isssue was CCPs fault they will not reimburse.
Also expect at some point to misclick and accidently buy or sell something at a stupid price.

Just get out there and do stuff and do not rush madly to get a BS, the most fun in the game is usually had in Assault Frigs and bombers and covops frigates.

Thanks all.

Especially this post ^ . I've got a buddy from another game I play that introduced me to EVE (he doesn't play much anymore.) The other night he transferred $20 mil worth of ISK into my account. I didn't like it. I know I know but I'm savoring the build up here. (don't get me wrong.... I didn't give it back... I bought a few implants instead.) He wanted me to buy a cruiser... but damnit... I'm gonna earn my first Cruiser.

And ya... aside from direct "how to" advice on interfaces and such... I'm savoring learning the game mechanics and trying to learn/ move on my own in a direction toward goals. Little things.... like placing an afterburner on my big slow-ass Sigil so that I can pick up my packs faster.... etc. etc.

Originality absolutely! I find myself thinking "I want to do xx" and then scrounging through modules and skills to understand what I'm gonna need to do to pull it off. (Like building out a Venture to make fast risky excursions into Low Sec and Null Sec.)

It's great to see posts like this. I think too often after the perception of this games grand scale wears off, most of us forget about how awesome this game really is. We spend most of our time bithcing about this or ranting about that and forget sometimes to stop and say, "This **** is ******* AWESOME!!"

Welcome to Eve Brother! Have fun!

Wanted to also add that this is the first game I've ever decided to play on a dual monitor set up. And the moment I sort of stumbled onto that I thought my head was going to esplode. Big smile

We keep reading about how eve is unfriendly to n00bs, about how the game needs to be more accessible, about blah tutorial is bad, blah other thing that deters n00bs, but in reality, I think the game is fine. Eve just doesn't have any more smart, awesome people like OP joining the game - most new subs are the idiots and league veterans we have to attempt to cater to if CCP wants their $$.

Every once in a golden while, we'll find a player that actually conforms to Eve's original demographic and likes the game as it is. We need more of these guys.

Welcome to eve, OP. You'll do well here.

Like all the rest, I want to welcome you to the game.

If you need help/advise feel free to join The Angel Project channel in game, always folks to ask questions of, there.

yes, bad things will happen to you
yes there will be losses and days where you log off in a rage
yes, there are jerks in the game

but

yes, it is huge
yes there are tons of experiences to be had
yes the real adventure is when you go out of your comfort zone

there are tons of supports in the form of blogs, podcasts, websites, corps that will train you and corps that will teach you lessons about who you can trust (clue, you never pay to join a corp)

fly it like you won it

because in playing, you have

I had similar feelings when I started Eve, and after 6 years there are aspects of the game that I still haven't explored and am dying to find the time to do so. Occasionally I come across a button, clicking which opens up a new vista, and I love this aspect of (the complexity) of Eve.

Welcome. I think you'll have fun!

I echo the OP's comments, I've been playing for a couple of weeks now, but only at weekend because I work away from home, and I love it! The sheer scale is awesome, but like anything that big, I feel I can take it one bit at a time. I really like the way that you can do just about whatever you wish, I can see I'll be here a long time!

Well, welcome to Eve :)

Posts like yours are really enjoyable to read because you show understanding that nothing happens instantly and a lot depends on your own initiative not on what devs implemented for you. Devs always say they just give us tools and we can build something beautiful with them or make other people miserable by touching their pixels in wrong way.

Few things from me as general advice:

- There is no such thing as playing Eve wrong if you enjoy what you are doing. That has not to be confused with being stupid, lazy and full of entitlement. In Eve you can do whatever you want but same applies to other people and they may want to explode you or scam you or exploit you in some way. Until it is all within TOS/EULA limits everything if fair game.

- There is no such thing as fair game. There is no such thing as space honor or guaranteed 1v1, etc. As one Tusker once said "E-honor is self imposed limitation". You can be gentle, honorable and helpful but do not be naive and gullible to think everybody will be the same to you.

- There is no such thing as being ready for low, null or anything else. If you think you are ready just make that move and see what will happen. And honestly, there is no amount of duels in hisec that can prepare you for being ganked by total stranger. And it applies to every space even hisec (and if you are mining please read on gankers, New Order dudes and such stuff).

- For the love of God when you decide to leave hisec, even for short trip google "how to survive in lowsec" and read and/or watch guides and tutorials so you will know how to theoretically avoid fights if you don't want to engage in them. Things can and probably will go wrong but maybe at least somebody like me will have to put some effort into finding you in space.

And last but not least do not let anybody tell you how you should play Eve. What one finds boring others find relaxing, what one finds difficult others find intriguing. Play as you like but listen to advice when somebody offers one because they may already went through some growing pains and can help you get better results faster.

Have fun and remember: ships are just tools, they will explode and you should take every explosion as a learning experience not the end of the world.

As a new player myself, i totally agree with you.

Right now, i am more time reading about Eve, than playing Eve myself (time constraints aswell), but i do it for pleasure, not as a burden.

Welcome to EVE!! I'm glad you are finding it enjoyable. I hope you continue to do so. EVE is all the things you said and much much more listen to the advice of others but make your own decisions on what to follow. The only thing limiting you in EVE is your own imagination and a few game mechanics. Enjoy and spread that enthusiasm to other new players, perhaps form a corp...when your ready of course.

Was so happy to welcome you new bro.. then that last line... I guess it will be the other kind of welcome then.
