We often see people in EVE who defensively claim to be good, decent folk in real life, yet play vicious psychotics in EVE. But can they really separate the two? Does one's EVE persona reflect who and what people are in real life despite all their denials?

A new study claims that playing the villain makes you a bad person in real life:

'Gamers that adopted villainous Voldemort as an avatar, were more likely to dish out a punishment in the experiment .

'University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign researchers found that people who played games as a heroic character were more likely to reward others.

'They warned that how gamers represent themselves in the virtual world of video games may affect how they behave toward others in the real world.
'

Right. Even since Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - I find myself driving down the road and just want to run over every single person wearing purple that I see.

This whole article reads like something that Jack Thompson helped pay for.

Also LOL @ the "Study" consisting of 194 undergraduates who played a game for FIVE MINUTES. With no control group. This is far from a "study" :P

(Edit: replaced link to Wikipedia page Jack Thompson (Activist) with a tinyURL linking to the same page, as the EVE forums seem unable to link to a url that includes a "(" in it)

Quoting from the Daily Mail, a paper (not unlike many others I admit) thats idea of reportable scientific fact is anything sensational no matter how badly researched or unproven. Just as long as it keeps its readers scared and the circulation up its in.

Must be legit then.

Of course an EVE persona reflects your real life persona. When there are no consequences, (i.e. in a video game) you will act however you damn well please. If that means treating others like ****, then I would put money on you treating people like **** in real life when it doesn't matter. That's a gross oversimplification to highlight a point, however.

This is the opposite conclusion I would have come to. Mine would read something like 'They warned that how gamers represent themselves in the virtual world of video games may reflect how they would be inclined to behave toward others in the real world.' In other words, acting like a douche in a game doesn't cause you to act like a douche in real life. Rather, being a douche in a real life would influence you to act like a douche in a video game.

Following that, where there are limits to how much of a douche you can be in real life without some serious consequences, (I would never attempt any kind of financial fraud for example, but because I'm not a douche, not cause I'm worried about jail time) when those consequences are taken away you're free to spread your douchey wings.

Does that mean I should start working as a real estate broker in RL too...? Sad

But yeah I agree somewhat with researches like that, while I don't equal the two I do believe there's a connection, but as long as all evil people live out their evilness in a game, I'm all good with it. Keep it in the game please plox.

really, there is no roleplaying in eve. Anyone using that old excuse to act like an psychopath in a game is still living in 2001. Eve is real.

Amusing then that you're talking to someone who exemplifies taking things outside of the game where they don't belong.

It's funny you say that. Just yesterday I was thinking that you should be escrowing real world transactions. For instance, a player is at fanfest and wants to change seats. But he's afraid that if he gets up that both the seat he wants and his current one will be taken, perhaps by evil goonies who just want him to stand. So, he calls you up. You sit down in his old seat, so that he can go to the new seat. Upon a successful transfer, you get to keep that ice cold tasty beverage he handed you earlier as payment. You... you didn't take a sip before the trade was complete did you...?
