Hey guys, I just started playing, and I have a venture with two Cu Vapor laser miners and two drones on it. The CPU and Power Grid are maxed out, and I have no way of defending myself so I'm pretty much stuck in high spec space. Does anyone have any suggestions on a ship I could upgrade to that's a little cheaper than the 29 million ISK mining barge.
Thanks for the help.

Any other frigate and do something other than mining now that you've discovered how personally economically worthless mining is

what do you suggest? I am able to make about 500-700k ISK in about 10 minutes by mining.

I suggest buy a GTC from CCP and sell the resulting PLEX on the market. Jump in some cheap T1 frigates and go have fun shooting stuff other than rocks. Shooting rocks is the most boring pastime there is in gaming.

If you can't afford a GTC, figure out how to scam for ISK. That'll get you much higher return rates than your current income.

I'd also suggest looking to move out of your npc corp into a player run corp. the social aspect of the game is far more rewarding than solo mining.

If you're dead set on mining, then your next step is a Mining Barge.

But I recommend against mining, to be perfectly honest. As a profession, it's fairly toxic to new players since it's boring and low profile. Even missioning is better.

To be honest, killing people.

Or NPC pirates, if your tastes don't run toward killing other players.

You might also consider giving Red vs Blue, or Brave Newbies, or EVE University a try. Those are all well known newbie friendly corps that will teach you how to PvP and have fun doing it.

Use your ISIS Ship Chart to follow the flow chart to various ships with mining bonuses. Choose by faction/race, and go for it.

Or get into a player mining Corp... and make sure they can offer you some free ships to start.

Any mining corp worth it's crystals has free ships for new members. Don't **** your time away with Corps that can't help you get on the fast track straight off.

I suggest buying your mining permit before any other mining equipment.

Also, as others have said, try something other than mining. We're not saying mining is a bad thing for new players, it's just that New Eden has sooo much more fun gameplay to offer other than staring at roids all day.
Try some missioning (Start with level 1 security missions) to get used to shooting things. Then move on to level 2 security missions. Join a pvp oriented corp and get someone who isn't a complete pubbie to set you up with a decent skill plan.
Next step is joining them in pvp roams in a cheap T1 frigate and have all the fun! You will 'splode.. a LOT... But you will learn to lose ships and learn the game mechanics.
Good luck!

You're going to do this to a new player? Give him/her a chance to establish themselves first.

Just save up, get that retriever. I don't think there's a better investment. 30 mil to make 10 or 13 mill am hour? You'd have to buy two or three mission ships to get there. You don't have to buy gtcs to play this game unless you go Pvp. If you have a lot of money, there's a lot of people that will appreciate you donating it to them in the form of blown up ships. Run some of the tutorials. Train some fitting and gunnery skills up to three. There's some nice starting isk to be made if you sell the stuff that you don't need. Run the Sister of Eve epic arc at the end of the tutorials. You might lose a couple frigates but it will be fun. Once you train the retriever you always have a quick way to make money for frigates or cruisers for Pvp. Cruisers are great cheap fun. Build a couple thru the week, blow Em up on the weekends. Then join a Corp, try for a fairly large one and start doing what the others guys said and have some fun. Mining is work but it butters the bread for new guys pretty fast.

He'd be shooting them as soon as they undock for the first time if it weren't a bannable offense.
