I'm new to Eve and I'd like to mainly mine. I've downloaded Evemon but I'm trying to figure out what ship I should be working to ultimately if I want to mine. I found a guide that was written regarding mining and it says the first ship should be the Caldari Bantam. The post that linked to the guide was from 2012 so I'm wondering if anyone has any more recent guides for mining.

I would like to know the ship I should be setting as my goal so I can start working on the skills necessary to get there. Also, any advice on mining in general is welcome.

That guide's a bit out of date. You'll want to start with the Venture. It's a dedicated mining frigate that does fine with regular mining, but is also good for gas mining if you want to branch into that eventually. If you complete all the tutorial missions (from the five career agents) you'll get given a couple of Ventures for free.

After the Venture you can move on to Mining Barges (Retriever, Procurer, Covetor) and eventually their Tech 2 versions, Exhumers (Mackinaw, Skiff, Hulk). If you're still enjoying mining by that point, you might want to train for the Orca and Rorqual, which are fleet mining support ships.

You can find all of these ships on the ORE tab in ISIS within the game client.

You'll probably also want to train for the Kryos and Miasmos for hauling minerals and ore respectively.

In terms of skills you'll want to train Mining, Mining Upgrades and Astrogeology to improve your mining yield, and then Refining and Refinery Efficiency to make refining ore more effective.

Insofar as general advice about mining is concerned, most of the advice you'll get is "don't mine". It can be a terribly boring profession, I'd strongly recommend trying out other industrial activities

Off the top of my head, so I very likely missed something, especially prerequisites (use EVEmon):

Mining Ship Skills:
* Mining Frigate -> Mining Barges -> Exhumers
* Mining
* Astrogeology
* Mining Upgrades
* Scanning
* Ice Harvesting [optional]
* Gas Cloud Harvesting [optional]
* Deep Core Mining [optional]
Plus you will need core skills for tanking (primarily shield), capacitor, targeting, (shield) rigging, etc.

Mining Laser Crystals
* Refining
* Refinery Efficiency
* [Ore] Processing (need level 4 for T2 crystals)
If you plan to stay in hisec, you don't need to train for the ores you will never see.

Mining Drones
* Drones
* Mining Drones
* Drone Interfacing (increases yield)
* Scout Drones (increases range)
* Electronic Warfare Drone Interfacing (increases range)
* Drone Durability
* Drone Navigation

Combat Drones
* Combat Drone Operation
* Gallente Drone Specialization [for Hobgoblins and Hammerheads]

I also recommend skills for a combat ship, like a battlecruiser, for both gaining standing to eliminate refining tax, and for participating in wars [they happen]. One possibility is to become a drone specialist; Amarr, Galente, and Guristas (Caldari + Gallente) have drone ships, but you can also go into turrets and / or missiles. Medium hulls is the most diverse class in EVE.

There are a bunch of skills for mining boosting and mining fleet command.

You may also want skills to haul and to trade. Probing skills are also a possibility if you plan to go into w-space.

PI, research, and manufacturing are also other possible directions to branch-out into.

There are so few mining skills, that you will have to branch-out eventually.

A lot of good advice above. A T1 barge is your first goal. A procurer is the cheapest and strongest. The Retriever will have a better yield because you won't have to empty it so often, but you will have to be more careful of ships trying to attack you.

You can find a lot of information from the forums by doing a google search: site:https://forums.eveonline.com/ mining This will pull up threads with mining in the titile.
