Hilmar announces Dust has around 400k active players

Not sure about dust, but this statement from Hilmar: "EVE Onlineā€ has more than 500,000 players around the world"

I think the number given by Hilmar is an exageration. In Eve, most players have at least two accounts. So the use of the word PLAYER is completely misleading. I wonder if he is counting the un-sub accounts as well as the active ones. Or he is also counting the alternate characters each accounts has? I cannot see how he can try to make people believe that 500K players are playing Eve on an active (connected) basis.

About the use of the word active, what does it really mean? The number of "accounts" connected to the game has hard time hitting the 50K mark during the week. Also, if he was trying to "impress" is investors, I would specify that the trial accounts and the ones being payed in ISKs are also included in the 500K.

This all looks like another business leader trying to impress the galery with IS interpretation of the numbers

Because diversifying your target audience on a different but related product is totally a bad idea.

No its actually a good idea. But that's not what they did. Diversifying = Keep the same stuff (players) + add new stuff. Here it was exclude current stuff (players) + add new stuff. Which is excluding.
And yes, excluding your most reliable and willing-to-stick-around audience, is suicide.

Not counting the whole joke of developping it for PS3 instead of PS4.
Plus a PS4 being closer to a PC, they could've made a cheap crossover.

If they offered Dust on PCs, I would definitely give it a shot. I think going console-only is where they shot themselves in teh foot.

Gotta agree with some of the guys above, if DUST were on PC, it would be a damn sight more popular.

The real issue right now is that they released in on PS3, which was very shortly replaced as a console in the open market by the rapidly selling PS4 (even I have one, and I've been PC-Master-race for years).

But if it made it onto PC, then it's a diversion that the actual EVE players can engage in, and here's the kicker, on the same machine they play EVE on in the first place.

It's a guaranteed market, since you know that anyone who plays EVE has a PC, by default.

I'm playing Dust and enjoying it. Personally I don't think that porting it to PC would be the magic bullet people seem to think it is.

Hilmar's statement is encouraging. I didn't think that there were that many players.

Maybe it's in octal, Dust has no players, and Eve has dropped to just over 300k players. That seems more likely.

Because 900,000 can't exist in a lower base, and we all know eve doesn't have millions of players, so it can't be a higher base.

Unfortuanetly 900K can't exist in octal.

Dust has a much more active playerbase than people give it credit for. I'd actually go so far as to say its more active than EVE probably is in terms of real, unique people playing it.

EVE, as we know, has most serious players running a minimum of 2-3 accounts. Some players run far more. Then you have to take into account that a lot of eve activities reward people for essentially staying logged in all day long. These two major factors result in EVE concurrent numbers snowballing up throughout the day until it's bloated around 50k.

Nothing in Dust will reward you for doing that, aside from killing your PS3 due to overheating it. So people simply don't do it.

That doesn't mean you don't have a large number of people who actively play the game, log on and off every day for small periods of time, and just happen to contribute to a legitimate concurrent number around 4k.

and here's a newsflash for you, you are also a eve player. So by your demented logic you also wants dust to fail.

I'd be perfectly cool if dust succeeded as that would make it self sustaining and not chewing EVE resources, but by the same token I don't want the universe doing impossible things on me, because of my structured worldview, likelyhood of cognitive dissonance and all that.

A PC port so dust and eve ran on the same client platform and could thus cross market properly, and so that ultimately eve<->dust experiences could be more seamlessly integrated into a combined arms game... oh hey wouldya look at that, I just done tripped myself over an elephant in this room.
