I want to be a scouter. I can use a prototype cloaking device, is that really all i need? Or do I need to be able to fly spec ops?

Also, besides being able to cloak, what else do i need?

(This is a scouting ahead for a fleet)

You need a mic and you need to know how to use the D-Scanner. That's pretty much it, though having a fast ship helps too.

basically what Riot said: Microfone, D-Scan and maybe ingame Map skills are the basics. A fast ship can help (MWD) a cloak cannot hurt.

I just wanted to +1 this post.
I think it is the first time I've seen a mic mentioned in the forums, something that newbs may not be aware of. Voice comms!

I will add:
You need quick comprehension skills of your surroundings, and good communication skills.
Know what information is important and what isn't.
D-scan skills (mentioned earlier)
Knowledge of other ship classes
Recon ships are a + for scouting, covert ops cloak
Combat Probe skills will help get kills
Perhaps cyno skills for hot drops

It all depends on what your FC wants, what kind of tactics and ships does your fleet employ, etc.

Some fleets are scouted with interceptors, some are scouted with a Recon, some are scouted with a boostingT3, some are scouted with a Prophecy with a Cyno on it.

Base requirements are microphone, knowledge of the area you're scouting and knowledge of directional scanner use. For everything else, ask your FC.

In the current meta, you need an interceptor. That is hands down the best 'scout' in game currently. You can just waltz through bubbles, and your extreme speed means that you can be places very quickly, and on demand for the FC needs. Intys are pretty easy to fit, but flying them takes a bit of practice- same with the D scanner, and using the 'C' command to quickly narrow down ships.

If you are looking for Reconnaissance ship IE. One with probes, and the ability to agressively probe down ships- then the best choice here would be a Tech 3 cruiser. Again, you can easily waltz through bubbles, and provided you chose the right T3- will have a very fast warp speed with the right subs. You can also maximise your probing skills, while fitting a cloak. Not nearly as fast or useful as an interceptor, but for certain roles reconnaissance ships play a good role as well.

I believe Agony Unleashed has a Scouting course... you should look into it. You'll learn a crapload from them. Agony Enrollment Forum. I haven't personally had the pleasure of taking their scouting class back when I (my main alts) took a couple other courses, but the Agony courses should be a prereq for anyone wanting to get into gang or fleet warfare. The scouts we interacted with on the roams were the epitomy of professional, which is kinda saying a lot given that this is a video game.

To be a proficient scout first of all you need to be able to survive on your own, other than that you need to have tactical and strategical insight and a good understanding of ships and their uses. Good probing skills and experience. Apart from that you need to be able to prioritise intel and be able to quickly and succinctly relay the intel in a way that the FC can "visualise" what's going on with all the details that matter. Also you need to be ok with never really getting on a killmail much, so it requires being a proper teamplayer.

Self sufficient, capable, good communicator, able to think and plan ahead and being able to anticipate what the FC will require of you.

There's not many good, proper scouts out there, most suck. Some are really good and they make ALL the difference.
