I see the drone ships as a needle like central armoured hull with engine nacelles places evenly around the rear (number dependant on size of hull)

The foreard areas would be studded with locking points and power points. Drone modules would attach on these points depending on loadout so each flying vessel would look different. Example of how I see this could work:

Frigate class combat hull:

Central hull with low cap and cpu, armour resists comparable to other frigates. 3 low slots that can hold small drones. These are either fixed drones (armour repair drone with average repair hp per cycle) or mobile drones ( armour rep drone that can rep local or launch and remote rep, both at lower rate than the fixed drone.

3 high slots with the same principle, docked gun/missile drones get dmg buffs but undocked they can engage at distance/ drone assist others.

Dessie hull also uses small drones but with more drone slots, cruisers and BCs use medium, BS use large drones and so on.

Hull cap is low because the drone modules themselves have cap. This should be balanced to not allow gross use of active low/medium fixed mods.

Drone prop mods would be achieved by the attached propulsion drones dragging the hull along as boosters whilst their cap holds out, but also launching drones gives an additional velocity boost like a sabot round, along with an agility increase due to less hull mass.

When docked all shield/armour/hull dmg is spread evenly across the central hull and drones. Launched drones can be targeted and destroyed individually. Replacement drones are carried in a drone bay if the hull has one.

The sight of these deadly needles crawling with mechanized horrors could be very nice indeed...

I really like this but one question, would they not be past projectile based weapons like slugs and missiles?, What about a variation of the Amarr energy base weapons only more intense.

In many cases anti-matter or missiles are more effective...drones would be all about efficiency if nothing else!

I think it could be an legit story move to revamp the whole game (if it could be needed in the far far future), something like,
New Eden - "we opened the eve gate YAAY! COOL!! "
Earthlings - "Wow, here are some under-evolved ppl around here, now its our place, we will guide you"
New Eden - "Dudes, chill, we are fine like we are, we have a working civilization and so on"
Earthlings - "Its all bullshit! Our is much better and from now on you will follow our rules, we are now the police and army, screw your concord, lol"

Something like that could happen in the future :D

Ohh there's a thought...new missions in support of concord fleet ships against invaders...

I like this drone idea of Corraidhin Farsaidh, having a drone that uses smaller drones attached to is hull that work as both a turret and drone, as well as extending that to a remote rep drone if I understand correctly to maintain the hull. This is an excellent and interesting direction to go look forward to seeing the design idea for it.

Having had a look at how Rogue Drones originated my original idea didn't work, that is they were created as smart drones by Gallente scientists, they escaped and took control of ships to spread throughout the galaxy. So I could go with option B based on the Rouge Drones continuous search for materials and host vessels, what happens if they come across a derelict Terran ship. How would the advanced technology spread? How could it affect their design? This could be an interesting way to introduce these drones if the Eve Gate to remain closed.

Some design ideas for the drones, based on a Terran connection:

It is I think safe to make some assumptions on Terran technology based on what we know, their super weapon has an effect on ships with shields making them explode, it also effects the ship firing it if it has shields, so any ship or drone using this technology would most likely not have shields.

Which brings me to my next assumption as one of the older races Sleepers use lasers and missiles for attacking targets, rather than projectile or hybrid style weapons they also don't use shields to defend their automated ships. So taking a large leap here what if Sleeper technology was developed from left over Terran technology thus giving some clues to Terran ship design doctrine (yes this is a large jump, but it is as likely as anything else).

So if Corraidhin Farsaidh idea is representative of a Terran weapon system then, I would imagine them using lasers and maybe a version of the Terran super weapon on the largest versions of the drones, it would not have shields relying only on armour for defence.

The drones could work in 2 ways:

  1. The repping drones, once the ship takes damage the rep drones deploy form the hull and stay at a short range to begin repping the armor remotely.
  2. The turrets / attack drones, these deploy from the hull and surround the target ship becoming something like blockade drone emitting fields that are similar to warp scrambling, webification, target jamming or energy neutralization. This leaves the main vessel safe from attack.

The bigger the drone mother ship using this method the more ships it would be able to lock down and potentially sharing drones in large groups could make these difficult to attack or defend against. I see a lot of potential for this idea and it would be fun to fight against them as well, area effect weapons might become key to victory Lol.
