"Find a good corp..." I like that. It's like when my grandpaw tells you how to succeed in life. "First, you get a million dollars." Uh huh. Good corps grow on trees. Just shake and they fall all around you. Take your pick.

Most people's early experiences, unless they luck out or "know somebody", is with marginal to non-functional corps. A guide written by an experienced player goes a long way compared to trial and error.

From what I've heard, though not experienced, roaming pirating can get expensive, or at the very least the income just keeps stride with the expense until you get real good at it - but, by then you'd likely be into more sophisticated PvP...or so it seems. And, from what I've seen, straight-up PvP can get expensive as well, especially if you go up against opponents with an even chance. Win some. Lose some.

The inconsequential alliance in your area of interest might not be as inconsequential as at first glance. Consider joining that alliance perhaps. However, again, this costs ISK. A steady stream of income, or a ragtag yarrrrrrr piratin' outfit....yarrrrr? Or, both?

One thing not many folks mention is, when you mission for a specific faction's corp - like one that has a station in the area where you operate - raising standings with them can actually reduce your operating costs if you use that corp's facilities. Missioning is also a good source of income - not spectacular, but steady. Don't turn your nose up at it, especially when just starting out.

Some might suggest you diversify. Try to have a finger in many pies. Don't be stodgy and declare "I only do this! Everything else sucks!" Ultimately, that steady stream of income...that spirals upwardly as you advance in time...that's what you'll be facing more than anything else. You're sitting on roughly 50 mil now? How long for you to afford a 450 million ship...and be able to afford to lose it?

Piratin' may be fun (yarrrrrr) but no pirate was ever accused of being upwardly mobile. Pirate

The right to free speech doesn't automatically carry with it the right to be taken seriously.
