Are there PvP roles that are in demand in this game?

Eve is different. Yes, logi pilots and EWAR pilots are fantastic, but if you go the DPS route you will never be turned down either. There is no such thing as "too big of a fleet", so if your fleet and the other fleet has the exact same composition and same skill for every character, assuming all things being equal, adding your one tiny little t1 frigate for that tiny bit of extra DPS will tip the scales in your fleet's favor.

Actually sometimes a fleet can be too big and the enemy will just refuse to engage and just scream blobbers in local, which is disappointing if you wanted a good fight. That said, we don't turn people down and just go.. "we have HOW many in fleet? shesh how did we get this big?!" and then go roam anyway. so yeah you wont be turned down but a fleet can be too big for its intended purpose.

This usually happens when your fleet is 1 ship bigger than the opposing fleet OR your fleet has a falcon.

TBH though people who run away from anything bigger then them are just care-bears pretending to be PvPers. Fly to die, always. Better yet, fly to make the other bugger die. If you're afraid of losing your ship then don't bring it. And sometimes a small but effective fleet can send a larger fleet packing. Now always, but it's fun when it happens :)

Pro tip. If you've never really PVP'd before, don't get a slowcat. Not because the FOTM will change but because you need to have experience with fleets and other fleet members will rely on you to not **** up. It will just end up with dead archons.

Good tackle and recons seem to be where the gaps are in my fleets.

So is that how the PvP is in this game? With 95% of the people saying "we have a stronger group than them, let's fight" and only 5% saying "this will be a tough fight, but let's do it"?

I didn't know retreat was so accessible in EVE PvP. The most exciting wins are the ones where you should've lost.

I apologize if this has been mentioned already, but I must mention it:

Other games look for certain roles because they can only have teams of 10-30 for completing end-game content, and they must have the requisite number of people in each role within that group. If they are lacking in healers, they can't even do the content until they find more healers.

Essentially since there is no fleet limit for any sort of content, extra manpower is rarely turned down, for any flavor.

With that being said, fleets typically have a theme to them if they want to be successful. They have a goal in mind and fit up their ships specifically to accomplish that goal as efficiently as possible. If you want to be accepted then having "good pvp ships" and fits trained before applying would be a great boon because this would mean that regardless of what the fleet wants to accomplish you'll have a relevant ship and fit ready to go. EWAR and Logi aren't always required for fleets.

Is it just me that considers tackle and scouting the hardest (from a player skill requirement) roles other than FCing?

Light tackle (whether frigate, interceptor or interdictor) requires very good reflexes, a solid understanding of angular velocity, how signature radius affects effective angular velocity, how to spiral and how to adjust your spiralling against different targets, and a solid knowledge of what will kill you.

Heavy tackle (force recon, hictor, combat recon or some other unusual fits) have their own nuances to learn too.
