The thing is, there are warning signs before a pirate drops into your DED complex and blaps you.

If you spend a week hunting down explorers, popping some and losing ships to others, you will understand those warning signs well.

I know I got a LOT better at defensive use of the directional scanner after spending some time using D-Scan to hunt people in quiet lowsec systems. Now, using the D-scan tricks I learned from hunting, I can run sites, expeditions and even anomolies confidently in lowsec even when local is busy. These skills again transfer to things like highsec mission running when under wardecs, or when you have publically available killrights against you.

I disagree because hunting down PVE players fitted for PVE is not the same as say PVP in FW or such, where you engage players fitted for PVP - which is more dangerous since you may not have time to fit just for them. You don't need to hunt PVE players to learn scanning/ship probing, only for easy killmail and lolz. Research! I'd recommend more balanced pvp activities over piracy since on a mission you are probably not going to have any real type of balanced pvp where you would try to fight back. Not in all cases, but more common, especially since the pirate has the reconnaissance edge.

It's good to have balance though, understand how things work. I'd more so recommend joining EVE Uni, FW or a little time into RvB (though not the final word since ECM is not there).

You don't really have to master frigates first if you've got a big enough budget to pay for cruisers indefinitely, for example.

Just depends on what you want to do. If you want to do missioning for a while, I'd suggest going the cruiser route, if you can afford to lose ten of them without it ruining you.

I have a friend who specializes in baiting new players in battleships to fight his frigate...they lose. Frigs rock balls. End of story.

About incursions, join a channel called "warp to me". I'm not sure if its all one word or has any capitalization so good luck there, but they are a take-all-comers incursion group. There are also incursion mailing lists you can get on.

As for pvp. Everyone says to start early becaise your character skills are nearly meaningless. Its all about experience. That experience costs much less in cheap t1 frigs with a low cost clone.

meh, 30 minutes typing a post and the forum loses it. The Draft just contained the original quote.

Not typing that again. sorry.
